Maybe your friend is an idiot and meant that they both have boxster engines. The WRX has a boxster engine because of the orientatation of the cylinders and the Boxster has a Boxster engine because...well, it's a Boxster.

You mean boxer not boxster. The name Boxster is a combination of boxer and roadster.
