it is street legal..

its just the seating position.. you cant have it sold in teh US with the 3 seating layout.. but you can as a single seater..

I have seen leno drive his on the streets of LA.

I don't think the seating has anything to do with it...

Bumpers are the thing that kills most.

I wonder if you can get the crash test videos the US goverment would've done for the certification.

My belief (based on nothing but urban legends, rumors, and horoscope analysis) is that it hasn't been crash tested.

and what makes a car not street-legal in general? I was wondering what the details were.

In general:

-crashworthiness
-safety features
-emissions

etc etc etc.

The McLaren F1 is street legal here in the US last time I checked...it might have changed, i don't know. I remember John Carmack trying to decide whether he should get the F1 or the Ferrari F50. He ultimately chose the F50...I've actually seen him drive it around a few years back. Sweet car.

I think the F1 is only legal in the US with some mods or something to pass emissions.

And that is the difference between the truly rich & the well off - The rich would say "I want a dozen of each."

Carmack spent millions on Ferrari's until he decided to go into aerospace engineering and rockets. Now hes spending millions on Armadillio Aerospace.
