YACT: Why is insurance in FL so expensive??

So I just moved down to Daytona Beach a couple of days ago (and I'm loving the weather), I start to look at changing my insurance so I would have a local policy. Go through Geico.....$3000 for the two bikes and one truck. Progressive....not much better (something like $2400) Yet, through my insurance company back in Mass, I'm only paying $1830 a year, and that with the two speeding tickets I got this year ($125, $400[don't ask 😉])

Same coverages, different states...what am I missing??

This thing seems to disagree with your thinking that Florida is more expensive than Massachusetts.

If its that much cheaper to live their, then slightly higher insurance shouldn't be too big of a problem.

hmm... 9 major hurricanes in 3 weeks

1,000,000 drug dealers per square mile

sixty eight percent of the drivers are over the age of 91

i don't know

Try ElectricInsurance (GeneralElectric Company). I'm in S.FL and they're the cheapest for me (Geico, Progressive, and some of the agent-ones are all more). If you are in the military, were in, or have a family member I think there is some other one that is cheaper but I am not in that boat.

Welcome to Daytona Beach.

I go to Embry-Riddle, though I'm away until the 10th when they let us back in.

Edit: On topic, big storms the size of the state came by here. Insurance companies period are smarting from it - that might be one of the factors.

Old people.

They're the bane of the road.

Yep. You could argue that young people are as bad, and you might be right - but every state has those. The elderly flock to AZ & FL though, and not surprisingly, those two states have the nation's worst drivers.

Just tried them and they said that I don't meet their requirements to be covered. I think the reason why my MA insurance is cheaper is becuase they might base the coverage on my bike based on how old they are, not on how powerful (i.e. CC's) like Geico and Progressive do.

You moved?

Hope you watch out for those gators 😀

Yeah, left Tuesday morning and got here late Wednesday night.

I pay $450/yr for standard car coverage just above the minimums and I am a 24 year old male. I don't think it is that bad though I have gotten some outrageous quotes before (something like 1 or 2 grand from Nationwide after having them a few years prior in NC). Also, I am in Gainesville which is probably cheaper than Daytona.

Probably, that and I'm also going for full coverage on everything.

i always thought MA insurance was outrageous.
i mean really.
there are only two auto insurance companies in the state.

I think it's a combination of old people and uninsured drivers. I'm paying $250/month for 2 cars, which is a record low for me.

Edit: Actually now that I think about it, I wonder if it is also influenced by the *other* cars around you. Down here in South FL, I realistically have the opportunity to run into a $150,000 exotic at least once a day - and on average I could plow into a $50,000 benz/bmw once every 2 minutes. I'm sure accident damage costs are much higher here than they would be in say, south dakota.

I pay $450/6 months and im 23 (with 1 ticket when i was 18) in FL.

Fergot to mention, this is on State Farm.

Not to mention, two or three of the most dangerous intersections in the US are in south fla. My insurance dropped when i moved from Broward county to Manatee county out west.

UHHH, hello, people, It's a NO FAULT Insurance state. They can't extract money from miscreants, so everyone pays up front.

It's only no fault for medical. I pay less than $1200 per year for full coverage with two vehicles 2000 or newer and two drivers. Doesn't seem high to me.

I don't think that no fault is only for medical. I am under the understanding that it applies to all costs of the accident. If I have an accident with you that is "no fault", then we each submit claims to our own insurance for any damages, medical or otherwise. A quick google search didn't give me any information but I could always pull out my insurance papers or give my agent a call tomorrow to find out for sure.

Old people seriously jack up the rate. Phoenix had AWEFUL insurance rates because the damn snowbirds that flock down there in the winters. They can't drive for sh!t in the podunk town they migrated from....and they REALLY can't drive for crap in a city of 3.5 million.

Does Florida also have high car theft? That's another reason AZ had such attrocious rates.

Florida, especially coastal cities and most of all South Florida, probably has extraordinary theft rates just because of the "gateway" to South America status. I remember reading articles about how easy it was to steal the cars and ship them south. At that point, they were unrecoverable.
