yact: why are 185/75r14 tires so cheap?

Probably because its a very popular size and they make more of them.

185/75r14 and 195/75r14 are probably your most common size tires. Most cheap economy cars have 14" rims that take these sizes. I can think of at least 10 models of cars that these tire would go on.
Hyundai, base Hondas, Daewoo, Kia, and so on.
