YACT: Whine in reverse normal on a manual?

I am getting used to driving a stick, and I know that reverse is a gear that needs to be treated differently than the others. I've been basically riding the clutch when backing up so that I don't shoot out of my parking place and back into the people behind me. Anyway, I've noticed that no matter how slow I go, or how much clutch I use, there's a 'whine' coming from reverse in the transmission.

Is this normal? The transmission is in great shape (or at least it should be...it's in a brand-new car!) but I just wonder if that noise in reverse is normal.

This is because reverse is the only straight-cut gear on a modern road car transmission. Most racing cars have all their gears cut this way, and create the whine in all gears.

^ Correct.

Awesome...thanks. Also, is it normal for cars to be able to shift without the clutch when the car is off? Today I accidentally forgot to press the clutch in while shifting to 1st gear while parking, and the shifter slid right into gear. Do I not need the clutch when the car is off?

I've pulled cars OUT of gear while the car was off, I dunno if I've ever tried to put them IN, but I always push in the cluth anyways.

That's normal as well, nothing to worry about...
