Get the Camry, the Highlander is more a Van than SUV.

I've never even looked at Subaru's, which is why I recommended the Camry.

the only thing i forgot to mention is that the highlander might be the 4 cylinder version...

budget is about 26k so the v6 is possible out

The 4 cyclinder Highlander will be very sluggish if its anything like the old 4Runner 4 cyclinder model.

I suspect though you'll be buying a Subaru Forester.
