Heh.. My dad read one of the "We're running out of oil!" articles, so now he thinks gasoline is going to be 5$/gallon by the end of the year. ;)

He's been wanting a more fuel efficient car anyway,

So, he wants to get a really fuel efficient car.

Are there any small diesel cars? I suggested that if we had a diesel, we could use vegetable oil if diesel fuel ever became scarce.. he liked that idea. ;) lol...

How reliable are those little 3 cylinder Chevy Sprints(I think)?

I hope you explained to your dad that if fuel starts costing $5 a gallon in the next couple of years he will have much greater problem that gas costs, that being said, I can't help you out with a car.

He basically thinks it's going to be the 70s fuel crisis all over again.

I actually kinda agree with him, it will happen, but I think his timeframe is a bit off.. it's a little more than a year away. ;) More like 10.

Ditto. Great car. A friend at work got one. Really neat instrumentation and kind of erie to start driving with no engine sounds.
If you are looking for great fuel economy this is definitely the way to go.

Honda Civic VX (or whatever the American counterpart is, the HX)

Reliable as stink, 45-50mpg, and a helluva lot cheaper than a Prius.

Get the Civic GX or whatever it's called. It runs on natural gas and the exhaust fumes is healthier than the smog filled air in major cities.

Here ya go, but I don't know the name. They all look the same to me!

Tell your dad I've been hearing the same crap about gas prices for 25 years. Never stopped me from buying a Caprice, Bonneville, Impala, G. Marquis, Lincolns and a full size van. In reality, gas prices aren't really that high, adjusted for inflation.

Gasoline is still affordable in historical terms.
  • The Energy Information Administration reports gasoline prices in both nominal and real terms. The real prices are adjusted for the effects of inflation by applying the implicit GDP price deflators to compare prices in constant 1996 dollars. The current ?record high? price is quite moderate by historical standards. We had higher retail gasoline prices as recently as 1985, and significantly higher prices from 1979 to the mid 1980s. (Click here for chart.)
Not to mention, how cheap is that econobox when you have to replace the timing belt, CV joints or McPhearson struts? There goes a year's worth of gas savings with each repair!

Great suggestion, Ornery.

Honda Civic HX - you can get high 40's easily, but I suggest the Honda Insight.

FYI - the Prius and Hodna Civic have all been getting subpar MPG with most owners. THe only Hybrid that is really living up to it's MPG munbers is the Honda Insight, which can easily be had for 13k used. Be kicks both the Civic and Priuses ass in MPG figures, many owners are able to get 70+ mpg :p Visit insightcentral.net for more info :)
