YACT: Which one to keep? 86 Ford Taurus or 98 Dodge Neon

I own a 98 Neon Manual with 97000 on it... The typical Head Gasket leak has already occured and been replaced... The struts just went out though and I'll need to replace them... I also replaced the radiator not to long ago.
The problem is it's a manual, and doesn't have air conditioning.

Chicago has a pretty crappy Summer high humidity and my commute is 1.5 hour in heavy traffic.. last summer I ended up coming in before 5a and leaving after 7p part of it was work, but a real factor was just the heat and traffic, and that sucks.

The 86 Taurus has 60000 orig miles and was driven by a little old lady to the store and church... seriously. It has air conditioning and it's automatic, which is nice in the fvcking bumper to bumper I deal with every day.

They are both in equally poor cosmetic condition. I haven't done a thorough check of the Taurus mechanically.

So what do you think?

the taurus....great cars...I've owned 2 🙂
the first was totaled in an accident i should've been killed (truck tboned me going 60mph, i walked away with just scratches)
second was given up only cause i wanted a truck 😛

tuarus' from that year are known to have head gasket and transmission problems...but at 60K and if driven pretty softly i'd say its a good buy to last another 40K no problem

Them's the breaks brother. It's a tough life, yet somehow I manage to keep my head up.

i had a 95 taurus and it was ok to be honest. got to be a bit of a money pit though. after 330,000 km, the transmission was done and i sold it for CAD$450

Both those cars are pretty crappy, but I'd go with the Taurus because of the AC & the automatic... just expect to spend some money on repairs.

I would say if you are looking for an upgrade don't bother with the Taurus. It would end up being a much bigger money pit than the Neon could ever dream of being. Save a bit more money and look for something like a mid 90s Buick that had a 3.8 ltr engine. More power than the 3.0 Taurus and better gas milage on the highway and generaly better built than a mid 80s Taurus could be.

I guess my taurus' never turned into money pits as i was able to do most of the work myself. There are tons of forums out there and apart from tansmission and engine issues the rest of the car is pretty east to work on, just get a Chilton manual and have at it, as a learning car there is no better imho.
I'm not sure about the neon, but i have a female friend that loves hers and does all her own work on it from oil changes to belt replacements to some modifications, so its not too hard of a car to work on either.
