YACT: Which car to buy?

My dad decided to sell his Miata, and as such he has offered to get another car mainly for my use. He has his BMW, mom has the van, and so he says I can "suggest" what to replace the Miata with.

I'm looking in the 4-8k range, with 8 being on the high end (figure 6k is a more realistic number, but i might be able to convince him to go higher.) So far, I am considering a mid-90's Celica (the model with 4 headlights, not the flip-ups), a mid-90's Talon/Eclipse, or something along the lines of a 240sx/mazda mx-6.

Which out of these would last the longest, be easiest to maintain (as I plan on learnign how to keep a car running with this), and of course, perform adequately😀

Feel free to add something else too🙂 thanks a lot!

i'd be surprised if you didn't have to replace the turbo on that 300zx after all this time...

anyway, i'd say a nissan 240sx or a honda civic or something (civics are the safest bet imho, with their solid honda reputation)..

though, if i could find a 240sx in nice shape i'd probably get that over the civic (w00t drifting)..an AE86 would be hot, but i'll never come across one in good condition 😉

Okay, the Celica's going to give you the best reliability of those. I'd stay away from the Talon/Eclipse, myself. Handle too poorly...
The 240sx would be cool, too, but Toyota's got a better reliability rep.
Have you considered an Integra from the same era?

No, I hadn't. I would hope that the interior on one of them wouldn't remind me too much of my mom's Odyssey though 😀....thats the major reason my dad didn't get a TL type-s.

The best suggestion in the entire thread so far was your own. The Celica, in particular the model you referred to. They had AWD Turbos I believe. The design on those cars are just plain kickass. They look awesome. At 200hp, the AWD Turbo Celica would be one fun car to drive, and I'd bet it'd handle quite well too. Although, I'm sure a FWD non-turbo Celica is still plenty of fun, and also more reliable/easier to work on (you mentioned this as a factor).

I'd definitely say a Celica is a safe bet. You can't go wrong with Civics, but you said you wanted something that performs adequately, and I'm sure a Civic would not live up to your expectations of adequate performance, considering you're used to driving a Miata (despite their reputation, I doubt they're anywhere near as weak as a Civic).

i wouldn't think so, especially going back a few years. There's an esy way to find out, though 😉
Honda has arguably the best reliability in the road, so, imo, the Integra would be up from the Celica. I like the styling better, too, but that's just me 🙂

My vote would be for an early to mid 90's Nissan Maxima... you can easly get a nice one for up to 8k, just gotta shop around....

they are really dependable cars, and not hard to learn how to maintain either....

Why don't you offer to keep the Miata, slap a turbo on it and take it to the track. 😀

ehh, a car with a top is a little more workable, i cant drag my computer anywhere in it...😀

The Celica he was referring to was the 6th gen Celica (4 round headlights, made from 1994-1999), those only had ST and GT trims. The all-trac turbo was last available in the 5th gens (1990-1993 IIRC). Regardless though, a 6th gen celica should be pretty reliable. They use the same engine found in the Corolla or Camry of that time (depending on trim, ST/GT) and share a lot of similar parts AFAIK.

We own a 6th gen Celica GT Convertible and it has been flawless as far as reliability goes. It's actually my gf's car but I often end up driving it more than she does heh. It's not particularly fast, I wouldn't even call it quick, but it's still fun to drive.

Just curious though, why get rid of the Miata? They're very fun, nimble, and tossable little cars. I'd personally hang onto it if you only have that much to spend, unless it's been having problems.

Well it's more an issue of him being uncomfortable with me driving it🙁. I have really protective/paranoid parents, and for some reason they refuse to believe i'm a good driver....yes, i know, everybody says that, but truth be told, i'm pretty good for my age. Anyway, it would be cool to hold on to it, but i'd rather have a car that they wouldnt have to debate with me every time i needed to go somewhere.
