YACT: Which camera?

As an SD600 owner, I recommend deciding between the SD630 and the SD700IS. I've taken almost 1500 shots, and haven't really wished I had IS yet. One time it would have been handy was a night rodeo, since I didn't have a tripod and all my shots were coming out blurry. I just switched to video mode, and got 640x480 frames from it later. The extra megapixel and IS isn't worth the price premium to me, but YMMV.

then get sd700IS sub $300 FTW!

Can't do that, birthday is oct 12th, and I usually get new stuff every year anyways, so that doesn't matter to me.

According to what I read, the IS has more optical zoom and image stablization, something the 600 and 630 don't have.

Any other suggestions?

Nah, not 630. 630 you lose the viewfinder. While people don't use the viewfinder all that often, it's something nice to have. 630 is a ripoff compared to the 600.

I pick SD600. I got mine for $244 very logn ago back with the Dell deals in the begnning of the yr.

Yeah the 600 is looking really good. So is the Sony though, and I have a feeling it will last me longer, since I like to do artistic photos sometimes, as well.

I'll take another look at the sd600 review I saw and the sample photos, is it easy to keep in, say, your pant's pocket?

try this Panasonic DMC-TZ1

10x optical zoom is very nice.
Alltough I must admit I keep wishing It had the menu and the setting from my powershot A80

Interesting... I think I am getting the sd600 or sd700 unless someone comes up with a better suggestion. $82 for a 4gb SD card is too hard to beat.

What will the Sony let you do, artistically, that the Canons can't? Personally, I'd go with Canon. I may be a fanboy, but with good reason: Canon consistently makes good cameras. I can't say the same thing for Sony. That and the Canon compacts will definitely last a long time. My old S230 has taken more beating than a red-headed step child. Also, my the S230 easily fits in a pants pocket, and it's gotta be close to 2.5x the size of these newer digital compacts.

I would get the sd700IS. Its one of the best compact cameras since its one of the few with image stabilization. I wish the A series would have IS!

Don't get the sony, my experience shows that they sell on camera size (how thin it is), and less on quality parts...which is what counts (and canons have)

If no one has anything else to say, this will be the verdict and I will go with the Canon SD700 IS.

Panasonic with a 10x OPTICAL zoom FTW

The Egg price of $269

Amazon $250 fee ship and reviews

I have no personal experance with, this, camera but I have owned 3 Panasonic models and own a FZ5 and have owned Minolta, canon, and olympus to name a few others and found that Panasonics take better pictures IMO. Plus you asked for a big zoom and 10X optical (not digital) and Lecia proffesional lenses will help you get the best pictures possible.

Okay I'll compare reviews. Trick is I go to a lot of parties and that Panasonic would be cumbersome to carry, but the pictures from it do look amazing. I guess I'll have to evaluate exactly what I want in a camera. Thanks a lot for the links, honestly that was a big help.

Evening bump, I am leaning towards that panasonic now, the F30 did not get as good a review as the Canon, and I am comparing the Panasonic soon.

Here's a link to "steve's" idea of what's better in many catagories from Point n Click to SLR. http://www.steves-digicams.com/best_cameras.html See if there's anything in the "Super Zoom 10x to 12X" catagory for a price (they're $300 to $500) you can stand. Every camera in that catagory has Image Stabilization, quick shutter action, and can be used for point n click and/or fancy settings.

The link gives the top 10 or so in each catagory with a link to reviews of each camera. You will have a lot more info after looking there.

My boy has the Sony (12X Zoom)DSC H-1 with 2 1/5 inch display and is very happy with it. That big display is iceing on the cake. The current Sony models are the H-2 ($325 2' display) and H-5 ($500 3" display) at Circuit city and elsewhere. Just found athe H-5 at Newegg for $429 http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.asp?Item=N82E16830179057 Comes with Nimh, charger, lens cap and so on. All you need to add is the Sony mem pro card of your choice. The egg has a Combo deal with 1 Gb card and lots of other stuff for $503 at that link right now.

Yeah I was looking at the Steve's list... I think I'll get one of the Canons since I need something ultra portable. The panasonic is looking good but is just too big, IMO.

Panasonic SPECIFICATIONS
Dimensions (H x W x D)
2.29'' x 4.41'' x 1.58''
Weight 0.52 lbs

Canon SD700 IS
Dimensions (H xW x D)
2.22 x 3.56 x 1.04 in.

The Panasonic is bigger, but not by much and it gives you so many more features. I think the pics of the unit are deciving making it look atlot bigger then it really is. If you look its only a inch longer and half an inch deeper. Get a ruler and really thats not that big a deal and still easily pocketable.

The 700IS is my pick although I am sad to see that Canon p&s cameras don't support RAW anymore. I used to have an S30 and it shot RAW. Now only DSLRs from Canon shoot RAW,.
