I shift 4000-4999 and cruise 3000-3999 when I'm on the highway. My previous car was quite a bit lower.

I'll shift around 3 or 3.5k rpm, and cruise at either 1800ish if I'm on surface streets, or 3-3.5k if I'm on the highway.

ppl who shift above 3000 piss me off (if you have a 4 cylinder, if you have the pwr, use it, but most ppl iknow really push their cars to hard)

3200rpm is about 65mph on my car in 5th gear

Given that my diesel revs to 4500rpm max, I shift at anything between 1600rpm and 3000rpm. 70mph in fifth is about 3000rpm.

I shift redline if im racing someone or showing off. actually a little under, usually around 6k or 6.5k, rather then 7 k. Normal driving, I try to keep shifting at around 2500 and cruising at 2k or lower. On the freeway, I cruise 5th gear, either 2k or 2.5k depending on speed. 2.5k puts me at around 80mph.

Huh? I think my car would really struggle if I shifted below 3000 RPM

3250 rpm is the perfect sweet spot for my mazda 6. 3000 is more than good enough but 3250 gives an extra pep.

To my fifth gear, I shift as high as 4500. Fifth gear is weak as well if I shift anything less than that.

When I quickly want to pass someone, I shift at right before redline (6500)

my friends s2000, you have to be above 3000 or it bogs.

Ahh the joy of a 9000rpm power band.

paul, thats a dumb idea. Good way to kill your gas mileage. I try to stay under 2500 where my turbos kick in to help conserve gas. It only takes a microsecond to get back into boost for me anyways, thats what downshifting is for.

your shift points should vary depending on the car you're driving, the conditions, your engine temp, the grade of hill, you direction on the hill, the rate at which you wish to accelerate, etc, etc.

to say one RPM is fvcking retarded.

The WRX has noticable turbo lag under 3k rpms, so I don't mind sacrificing some gas mileage for a more enjoyable ride.

I have a 6 liter V8, and I shift above 3000 sometimes

100mph in 6th gear is right about at 2100rpm :)

Driving should always be flexible based on the conditions.

And btw, most any car gasoline engine likes to operate between 2k and 4k rpm. Below 2k should only be for rare moments starting off in 1st, or slow corners in 2nd, etc. Above 4k should be only as needed for additional power. Bogging your engine below 2k all the time is not only LESS fuel efficient than driving normally, but can lead to reduced engine life.

edit: and there's nothing wrong with shifting regularly above 3k. Some cars (even/especially some fast cars) require that they be driven that way and.... it's not harmful (unless the engine design is unbalanced crap).
