YACT: Wheel Alignment

Red

Diamond Member
My car is pulling to the left. I called sears and they do a four-point/wheel alignment for $59.99 and it takes about 1.5 hours.

Should I get my tires balanced and rotated at the same time? Balancing: $10.99 per tire... rotation costs $12.

So, if I were to get the whole shibang, it would be $115.95 before tax.

Is this a good deal or should I call around? Thanks.

I don't know what balancing is. And if I can rotate myself, I'm assuming that means switching the front tires with the rear tires?

A tire is not perfect when it is mounted on the wheel and requires small weights to be added to the wheel to make it spin without shaking. One of you weights can fall off, and then the tire is no longer balanced.

All of those prices sound fair to me, but if you don't notice any shaking, I wouldn't worry about getting them balanced. (They need to be balanced when they are new.)

Rotating means moving the front to the rear, but on most cars you should also switch the rear tires so that they are turning the opposite direction. You will get most even wear that way. In my opinion it is WELL WORTH $13 to have the tires rotated. It is a PITA to jack up the car three times to move the fronts to the rear and then reverse the rears.

Have the alignment done and if you notice any vibration afterwards then get the balance and/or rotate.

On a side note, I rebalance my tires & wheels when I get down to about half tread wear.

First, I would avoid sears like the plague. You're just going to get ripped off. Second, if your car's pulling to the left (or right) it probably involves more than an alignment. I'd say worn front end components, hanging caliper, low air pressure (you did check your air pressure), or something along those lines. If you rotate your tires every 4 or 5K you can usually avoid alignments altogether, and Sears IS NOT the place to get an alignment. For about $40 (1/2 labor) you can have your car checked out at the stealer, ah, dealer. This is money better spent. Then you can make a more informed decision. Tire balance? If there's no vibration, forget about it. Rotation? Front wheel drive: cross rears to front and bring the fronts straight back (avoids radial tire pull). This could be your problem. To check it out quick, just transpose the front tires. If the problem goes away, you've got it. That's all Sears is going to do, anyway. Rear wheel drive: cross the fronts to the rear and bring the rears straight up. Same thing with the radial tire pull. To summarize: check your air pressure (pump them up to 35psi, then adjust the next morning), switch the front tires with each other (or do a full rotation). Bet this takes care of the problem. If you have to, go to a tire shop to have it done, but mark the wheels so you can check them later. Most shops don't rotate properly.

Personally I've had tires re-balanced and noticed the elimination of some vibration(s).

Alignment is one of the most important things that I think should be done with a car. As long as sears has the latest Hunter machines (either the 811 or the 511), then $59.99 isn't bad for a 4 wheel alignment, but i don't really trust some sears with my car.

And, if they ahve to take off the wheels from the car to rebalance them, whats the extra $12 to rotate them for? A tire shop like BigO or americas tire or discount tire will rotate and balance for $30 or less for all four.
