YACT: What's wrong with wagons?

What's wrong with station wagons these days? Why do people go for "Mini-SUV's" that can't really do serious offroading and handle worse than a wagon on the road?

Wagons I think are cool:

Audi A4/A6/S6/S4/RS4/RS6
Subaru WRX, Legacy GT
Nissan Staega (only in japan, think G35 station wagon).
Mercedes C class, E class
BMW 3 series
Volvo V70R
Dodge Magnum

Probably a few more. But for those who need storage space, why would you pick a Lexus RX, Toyota Highlander, or BMW X3/X5 over these?

Because people can't drive passively in a wagon. If they're in a big SUV they can be as oblivious as they want because they're "safe". 😉

A lot of people don't like station wagons for some reason, it's quite interesting. I, however, do not like the Magnum, it's too goofy looking (to me).

I like my subaru "wagon".

Stationwagon's have such a stigma surrounding them in America.
I believe they are called hatch backs elsewhere.

Wagons are great. I think they have the stigma of being a boring family car - when I think of wagons, I think of the boats of the 80s (?) with the woodgrain side panels, etc. Wagons today are much nicer looking, and they're very practical. Sure you can't fit a 4x8 sheet of plywood in the back like Ornery would like, but you can fit a heck of a lot of other stuff.

I like wagons, great family car 🙂

We have a Volvo 850 GLT and it's a nice car, I just would have preferred a manually tranny in it than the 4 speed auto 😛

i like wagons too. especially the WRX and the RS6... i like how they can beat a lot of "sports" car on the road... and yet you can fold down the seats and take a nap in it during lunch =P

There are no decent sized wagons. Even the Magnum is kind of small capacity-wise. Hell, most minivans will handle more cargo than most SUVs today. Pretty pathetic IMO. Nice big wagons used to be a dime a dozen. They could haul a huge amount of cargo or passengers, as well as tow mega loads, and used standard automobile parts in the drive train and chassis. Oh, and wonder of wonders, they drove and handled just like a car! :Q

They don't ride high enough to be disproportionately dangerous to the occupants of any car you may hit, so . It's all about screwing the other guy, after all... and of course being trendy

mehhh. my dad owns an a6 avant. i look at a6 sedans and sigh... its a good looking wagon, but compared to the car? it makes me sad. an suv is an suv, and you wont be sad. 😛

Umm.. Because a wagon is nothing more than a sedan with extra trunk space?

I would love a wagon but SUVs are much bigger than wagons. I'll put my MDX up against any wagon you can name that they sell right now.

you're driving a wagon...

EDIT:
A6: Cargo Volume (cu. ft.) 36.40
MDX: Cargo Volume (cu. ft.) 14.80
