YACT: What's the point of a Throttle Body cleaning?

StageLeft

No Lifer
So I did this and cleaned my throttle body. I'm having a minor fuel and/or air delivery issue at times and so I thought this would be a good place to start. I've yet to test it, but having done the cleaning I don't see really how this could help. Even a dirty throttle body like in the pic (mine was worse!)...when you're giving throttle you're opening the butterfly plate enough that any smudge on the outskirts shouldn't really be hurting anything, right?

Sometimes the throttle can start to stick or not move smoothly, the carbon can build up and (sorta) hurt air flow

I should also mention that I lost a damn bolt somewhere in the engine compartment. It was one of many, but damned if I can find where the little buggar fell to!

i wouldn't start the engine without finding it

The gunk that fills up in the throttlebody can restrict airflow going into engine. It mostly hurts the engine's responsiveness. We cleaned the throttlebody on our Corolla after 8 years, and we defiantely noticed a difference.

Another problem might be the MAF sensor. They are known to fail on some Maximas, especially if you have aftermarket intake.

btw, I met the guy who runs the motorvate.ca site. Very knowledgable...and a fast driver too!

I think the 1.5" bit is where the actual wire is suspended. That 1.5" ring hangs inside the of the inlet pipe itself.
