You have a car with 100,000 miles on it. I am graduating in a year and hopefully i will get a job..(fingers crossed).

By the time i graduate, the car will probably have 120,000miles. I am gonna be in around $10,000 in loans and debt. WOuld you get a new car? Around 120,000miles the car will probably need to have service and repair work done to it that would probably cost between $1,000 to 2,000 btw its a 2000 Jetta.

Is it worth it to repair and maintain the car on a regular basis or get a toyota?

Don't do the same stupid thing that a lot of university grads do, which is put themselves in yet more debt the second they enter the job market with a frivolous expense. 100k miles is nothing.

What do you want to do? If you want a new car, get a new car. If you are looking for us to talk you out of it, don't get one.

speaks wise words.

I don't know how reliable your car is, but my family owned an '85 mercedes for until a few months ago. 200k miles--I think the worst repairs we've ever had to do were uh...rebuild transmission and replace the AC controller.

If I were you, I would stick with your car until it starts crapping out. In which case...I'd sell it and buy an older camry/civic/cheapo (but reliable) vehicle.

If you get a "new" car, get a 3 year old one with ~35,000 miles on it.

Factoring in maintenance and depreciation, the cheapest car to own is a 3-5 year old car with 30000 to 60000 miles on it.

I just find it hard to justify spending 1k - 2k for a car repairs. Especially what VW charges. I do like the Scion Tc, but i guess that can wait. Being debt free for the first time since 17 does sounds enticing.

I have 146,500 miles on my car..it's a 6-7yo Toyota, and still runs fine. As long as it works, you might as well keep it..
