Is there Chev up there?
Saturn Vue v6 in 2004 and up is a Honda V6 and transmission.
If you are second guessing the SUV route how about an AWD Pontiac vibe?
Corolla hatchback with AWD keeps you in your 'Jap' comfort zone.

We have a 2006 Liberty now and it is a fun little SUV to toss around. It's not that tippy, compared to the Explorer it replaced, and the interior build quality is WAAAAY better than an Escape.

This is our 4th Jeep(1993 Grand Cherokee, 1999 Cherokee, 1999, Wrangler), so I have a lot of experience with them. This one has the best build quality out of the four. Don't expect a speed demon.

traitor ;)

how could you drive a liberty AFTER you'd owned a wrangler? liberty's not a jeep, it's a compromise :(

Wrangler all the way. I learned to drive on my dad's Jeep Wrangler High Country Edition (soft top, 5-speed, 4-cylinder), and I miss it. (I ended up getting a four-banger front wheel drive grocery-getter when I finally got my own car.) The Jeep was slow as hell on the road (too heavy and underpowered), but it's fun in the dirt, and something about those huge removable half-doors makes it very nice for cruising long stretches of A1A on a hot day.

I loved my TJ, but it's more of a toy than a daily driver.
Had to sell it when my son was born. Traded it in for a Liberty and was pleasently surprised by it. With a few modifications, it can handle all but the toughest trails and in comfort.
I have beat my Liberty to death on off road trails, and have not had any issues with it in the 4 years that I've owned it. The only problem I had was a lower ball joint recall that I had to take it in for.
You won't get good gas mileage out of this Jeep, however. This is mainly due to weight. Just look at the underside of a Liberty and that of an Escape and you'll see a big difference. Get a Diesel, if possible (about 24 MPG).

Don't go with a hybrid. As stated previously, batteries don't like the cold.

Another Forester vote. I have been doing research on these little guys for about 6 months and am buying one shortly.
