YACT: What would cause a truck to keep running after you take the key out?

2004 GMC Suburban with 8600 miles. About half the time when you take the keys out the thing keeps running for a few minutes and then cuts off. Somewhat annoying.

Also, does anyone know how to disable the thing that GM has where the parking lights stay on for a few minutes after the car is shut off?

HAHA - I can imagine that gets annoying when you're trying to be *discreet*.

EDIT: Damn, spelled it right the first time.

For the parking light thing, try turning the lights off before the engine. Or turn the lights off, then on, and then back off. (that works on Dodges)

LOL - that has got to be annoying....but seriously, why don't you take it in to the dealership since it is still under warranty. Most likey it is a problem is the ignition "system" not turning off, or something like that

Better take it back.
On old cars it was somewhat common. It was called dieseling and caused by hot spots and/or deposits of junk that stayed hot in the engine. The hot spots kept combustion going even with no spark provided by the spark plugs. Again, this is what happened on old cars with carbs. The carb of course kept supplying fuel and air, but with a 2004 and fuel injection I don't know how this could happen. If you pull the key the fuel flow from the injectors should stop. Maybe this is computer related.

I would think it's a problem with your igntion switch. It's not recognizing that you've turned the key back. Either that, or the key might be so worn that the switch can't tell it's been turned. I'd take it to a shop or the dealer and have them take a look at it. I don't know what the deal with the lights is. Has it been doing it since you got it, or is it something that recently started. I don't know if that's supposed to happen or not, but you might want to ask about that as well.

Edit: Just noticed that the car is a 2004, so it's probably not the worn key thing. Just forget that I said it. 🙂

for the delayed lights... on my gm car there is a switch on the left side of the steering wheel that you can turn all the way to the left for shorter delay and to the right for a longer delay. the name that's printed above the switch has escaped me. it's right above or below the interior light switch. i dont know if yours is the same.

i looked in my car while i was out... called 'twilight'

Sound like it is waitng to cool down or something. For the lights, I would guess that would be in the owner's manual.
