YACT: What is a good SUV for hauling a lot of things?

My parents need to buy a large SUV to carry a large dog and a lot of things back and forth from NJ to MA, about 320 miles a weekend for traveling. I was thinking something along the lines of a Chevy Tahoe, and it needs to be pretty good in the snow because it snows a lot there. Any other suggestions? $45,000 would be about the limit they'd spend on one, thanks.

Ridgeline? I know its not technically an SUV, but it looks very capable of doing everything and anything.

How about they go out and test drive some and decide for themselves. I know, weird concept when you could just ask people on ATOT

V8 has more then enough power and MUCH better gas mileage, unless his parents are towing - in which case a Powerstroke in the excursion, or F-350 would be much more practical. They might even offer the powerstroke in the expedition now (with the excursion discontinued) I don't pay enough attention to Ford products to know or care

Yukon XL or Suburban. Max interior cargo space, and heaviest towing capacity. No difference between the mpg of Tahoe/Yukon. If your towing heavy loads the 8.1 liter v-8 comes in handy.

Are the Yukon XL and Suburban basically the same car?

Exactly, should have just put a / . So is the Cadallac Escalade.

Although I have never owned one the Excursion also comes in deisel which may be better for the long haul.

I was joking by suggesting the most oversized gas guzzling vehicle I could think of, short of a H1. :)

For two people and a dog I don't see how a midsize SUV could possibly be too small. Or how about, gasp, a minivan?

They have a Toyota RAV 4, but they think it's too small to use up there, it's also for more than 2 people, I'll ride in the car too, as well as my brother. So you're talking 4 people, a large dog, and supplies for the weekend as well as other things they feel they need to take from one house to another. Also large SUVs tend to be very comfortable compared to smaller ones.

I know this is a little odd, but the Honda Element would be great! The floors and seats are easy cleanup, variable seating arrangements, and they can carry way more cargo than you would initially think. Its not just some trendy youth-y car, its got a lot of practical value.

Also has AWD option for the snow, I hear it doesn't do half bad.

How much stuff are you bringing for a weekend? Any SUV should work just fine unless you have some kind of unusual gear to haul. Even a dodge magnum would probably work nicely.

every weekend, though?

Because it might be more economical to use a smaller SUV most of the time, and take two cars when everyone, the dog, and the kitchen sink needs to go from one house to the other.

Then again, if they have a $45k budget for a new SUV, "economical" isn't really a priority;)

No no no, see these people actually plan to use their SUV for at least some practical purpose. Expeditions are only suitable for 5' tall blonde women who like to drive over railroad tracks and speed bumps at 2.5MPH. The V-10 only if they have no children in the vehicle. Keep that straight please!

Um, I don't think they offer the 8.1L in anything but 2500 models which I think are eliminated this year. Besides, the 8.1L is a waste. If you're towing that much, get the f-ing diesel for better gas mileage. Jesus christ people

"But I don't like diesel, it's loud and smelly, and yet I'm willing to put up with the horrible, HORRIBLE performance, handling, braking, sightlines, ability to park, general maneuverability, fuel economy, and other downsides of trying to use an oversized block of sheet metal strapped to a pickup chassis with b0rked springs as a real truck"

OK, maybe I'm coming off a little strong:)

You can't haul dick in a SUV because there isn't enough room between the floor and the celling. Thats why I have an old caravan. Take the rear seats out of that and you can haul just about anything in it plus it doesn't get crap gas mileage and being FWD is decent in the snow. Its taking another trip to the dump tomorrow because my friend can't fit crap in his explorer. Anyway minivan is better.

GM does not make the Suburban or the Yukon XL in a diesel smart guy. The L65 was discontiuned in 1999 when they went to the new GMT800 production platform.

All trucks are soft right now. If your parents go used, they can save a BUNDLE. It makes almost no sense to buy a new Suburban, even with incentives because the depreciation is so bad. I've seen one year old loaded LT's sell for $25k wholesale.

If they go 3-4 years old, they can go from spending $45k to about 10-15k.

Expedition doesn't come with a V-10. 5.4l V-8 only. The Excursion used to come with a V-10 option, as well as the power stroke diesel, but Ford quit making it last year. (or was it the year before?)

Expedition or Tahoe would be good choices for what your parents want. Personally, I prefer the way Fords are built, but different strokes for different folks...
