YACT: What Is A Fair Price To Pay For This Repair Job?

Dump truck dropped a melon sized rock in the middle of the road right in front of me, I had no choice but to drive over it (we were on a two lane road).

Car drove home fine, but now I have an oil spill in my driveway. I checked under the car and it looks like the spill originated at the oil pan. I can't see the damage, but my guess is that it needs to be replaced.

I drive a 1992 Honda Accord sedan.

Any cost guestimate for a mechanic to replace the oil pan would be appreciated.

It depends on how much of a PITA it is to get the oil pan off. Some cars you can just pull it off, and on others it's blocked so you have to almost pull the motor out to get to it.

I'm not a car expert, but I can see the oil pan clearly on the underside of my car (which is why it was pierced by the rock). I assume this means it is easy to access?

Yeah, just look and make sure that you can see the bolts all the way around the pan, and that there's nothing blocking the pan like a crossmember or something so that there's enough room to pull it out. In that case, it shouldn't cost very much to have it done - I would guesstimate an hour or two of labor plus parts.

Just cause you can see doesn't mean it's easy to get it off. Same with my old Integra, I could see the oil pan right there but when I crawled under, I could only see half of the bolts holding it on.

1992 accord, you have to remove a crossmember and disconnect the downpipe from the header on the exhaust. It's not as easy as you might think. I'd say it'll probably cost you 200-300. I think the pans alone are like 80-90...could always find one at a junkyard, though. The gasket is another ~$18.

Good lord, didn't you get the license number of the truck? Their insurance should pay for all this crap!

Yep, and all those "we are not liable for..." on the back of trucks is pure BS. If anything comes off their truck and hits your car THEY pay.

1.) Find hole.
2.) Mix up jbweld.
3.) Smear jb weld on hole, cover with duct tape, prop up a board or something to apply pressure.
4.)???
5.) Profit!!!

Just to let you know, a driver is resposible for what comes off his/her vehicle. I would have the dumping company pay for it, therefore, who cares what it costs.

I have never seen one that says that they are not responsible for what comes off their truck. They generally say they are not responsible for what their trucks kick up off the road. Which is true.

I had it changed on my car once, 91 Accord so same generation. It will run a couple hundred, that's about all I can remember though.

Shilala's JB weld trick might work. Get it hot, drain the oil and jack or block the car so that it drains away from the dent/hole. Clean it with brakleen. Spray it so that it squirts through the hole into the pan, and runs out the open drain hole.
Once you get it clean enough that oily crap does not bleed back out of the hole, go take a break and let the brakleen completely evaporate. Give it an hour.
mix up the JBweld and smush it into the hole so it makes a small mushroom of material inside the pan. make a nice little patch of it on the outside, and prop it up as shilala suggests. I'd bet it would outlast the car🙂

here in NC they say everything from just not responsible PERIOD to some that say not responsible for broken windsheilds, etc... I guess they think most will not challange what it says on a dump truck, I mean that is just as good word as the us constitution right. 😉

Bad thing is most dump trucks here don;t even have plates. Soemone wrote into the paper about it, even had pictures. So even if soemthing happens to your car what are you going to do run them off the road.

Also, ask on www.cb7tuner.com - it's a forum for this generation Accord

Like most other Honda boards there are plenty of ricers and most people have an interesting way of speaking to say the least 😉

There was no way I could get the license for the truck; I was going one way and it was going the other. If I swerved one direction, I would have hit a rock wall; if I swerved the other, I would have hit an oncoming dump truck

If I slammed my brakes, trust me, I would have still hit the rock and I would have gotten rear ended as well.

I would have loved to track down that sumb1tch though; looks like $350 is the going rate from the shops I called. I will drop it off tomorrow.

As far as damage to my oil pan, there is a good sized crack and a separate puncture. It will need replacing.

This is the union method, ignore him and get your car fixed properly. If the rock was big enough it could have bent the pan enough to be leaking at the flange and no JB Weld crap is going to fix that. You need to carefully check the underside of the car for any other damage that may not be evident at the moment.
