YACT: What is a cheap/fast 1/4 mile car?

I just found out that there is a 1/4 strip not too far from my house that has weekly open events going on, but my TDI Golf is hardly suitable.

What would be a cheap fast drag car to pick up for this kind of fun? It doesn't have to look great, it just needs to be cheap, OK fast and easy to work on.

Suggestions?

*edit* Also, what would the insurance be on this type of car considering I would drive it only once a week... does it need to be fully insured or can I get some type of special insurance?

Cheapeast brand new car out of the box is a Z28 or a T/A. For a used, (although not the fastest out of the box but definetly the easiest and cheapest to work on) is a Fox-body Stang with the 5.0 EFI. (87-93)

For those who asked, I doesn't have to be a new car (I just got one), I just want something relatively cheap that goes pretty fast, or will go fast with some cheap mods I can throw on. :D

Just get a Civic with about 30 "Type R" stickers and you have a 8 second car easy. Cheapest to fastest ratio is a motorcycle, but for cars, get something like a early 60's Chevy II and drop a 350 in it, very light and fast. For a newer car I'd have to agree with the 'stangs and Camaros.

If you're just gonna use it once and can tow it to the track, just get an old VW Bug, bring it to Mexico and have them drop the biggest engine they can find into it :D

Does it really matter how fast it is? I think you just want one that's consistent. Back in '75 or so, this guy I worked with had a '56 Chevy that he raced at the track. Told me he got a slick trophy with it, but it cost him a tranny and hard wear and tear on the whole car. Is it worth it? :Q

If you are looking for cheap, try an older Mazda rotary engine (Cosmo, RX3, RX4, early RX7) . . . make sure the engine is 13B. You can get close to 300HP without turbocharging (absolute redline is 11,000 RPM on a 13B - 1.3 L engine).

Once you get the hang of it, rebuilding a rotary is a piece of cake.

How cheap is cheap though?

An $800 minivan is cheap, but you could also say a new Neon, at $13,000 is cheap...

Check and see when your track does bracket racing...in bracket racing, you do a couple of passes and get your time, lets say 15.0 sec, and another car does it and has 13.0 sec...

now when you do the bracket racing, you would get a 2.0sec head start, bracket racing is about consistency :)

That's sorta silly...it's like forcing me to wear one of those pregnant bellies when I run a race with a fat guy.

It takes away the effort of putting together a sweet car...

But if you can't run back to back consistent runs...then you don't know how to drive or deserve that sweet car :D

Plus you get to race against semis, bikes, and cars way faster than yourself
