Viper, it sounds like you've seen the light, but I just wanted to throw in another vote for "DON'T tow that thing with your car!"
I don't think there's any chance you'd make it. Plus your gas miliage would probably be cut in half, plus the cost of renting the trailer one way - I suspect you'd save yourself a few hundred $$ by NOT trying it. PS: How many miles is it, anyway?
Use that $ to ship your stuff. You may want to look into some of the air cargo type places, I know they ship big, heavy things for "Reasonable" amounts of money - you may be able to make a largeish crate (like a 3 foot cube) and stuff a bunch of non-fragile crap into that and ship it for < $150.
Last but not least, I'd look into those "PODS" type of containers. Surely somebody ships these. Basically they are 6 foot x 6 foot x 3 foot containers they drop off at your house, you load your crap into them, lock them, and then (usually) they get stored in a warehouse somewhere until you want them back. However, I'm sure that some company would also ship these cross country.
I think you have a lot of options.. but towing the trailer - bad move. Also don't forget the power of the internet, if you're concerned about having things like some basic furniture etc for when you get there, check out the local classified ads online etc and you could probably line up anything you need.
