Viper, it sounds like you've seen the light, but I just wanted to throw in another vote for "DON'T tow that thing with your car!"

I don't think there's any chance you'd make it. Plus your gas miliage would probably be cut in half, plus the cost of renting the trailer one way - I suspect you'd save yourself a few hundred $$ by NOT trying it. PS: How many miles is it, anyway?

Use that $ to ship your stuff. You may want to look into some of the air cargo type places, I know they ship big, heavy things for "Reasonable" amounts of money - you may be able to make a largeish crate (like a 3 foot cube) and stuff a bunch of non-fragile crap into that and ship it for < $150.

Last but not least, I'd look into those "PODS" type of containers. Surely somebody ships these. Basically they are 6 foot x 6 foot x 3 foot containers they drop off at your house, you load your crap into them, lock them, and then (usually) they get stored in a warehouse somewhere until you want them back. However, I'm sure that some company would also ship these cross country.

I think you have a lot of options.. but towing the trailer - bad move. Also don't forget the power of the internet, if you're concerned about having things like some basic furniture etc for when you get there, check out the local classified ads online etc and you could probably line up anything you need.

It's about 2500 miles, & I've pretty much abandoned attempting the trailer. While it would likely weigh <1500 lbs that's still a little over what the car is rated for.

I can ship a 30 lb 24x24x18 box (U-Haul XL Box) for $22.45 via FedEX ground, delivery in four days. Even if I figure $35 per box once I count double boxing, packing materials, etc. it's still pretty reasonable. For the cost of the trailer I could ship 4 of those, not to mention the savings in gas.

My theater stuff (minus my home built sub) can be shipped piecemeal in those boxes (the speakers anyway), I'll take the receiver in my car, along with my DVD player. I may have a local buyer for my TV & stand, if I can sell those I'll buy an HDTV when I get there & I'll be back in business (minus the Tempest).

The vast majority of my stuff can be shipped in those 4 or 5 boxes, the stuff that's too heavy to ship easily (or that can't be shipped, like guns) I can take in my car.

What part of my sentence do you not understand ?

First off, it's proper name is a car dolly, the front wheels are driven up onto a small ramp which is attached to the axle, the axle is connected to the hitch assembly or you can tent a tow bar which connects to the front of the vehicle and then to a hitch ball, this is not recommended because you must limit your speed and distance because the driven wheels are turning.

Car dolly

Tow bar

Ahh, my bad. Didn't read it right. I need to quit posting before 7AM.

I know they are small, but it will at least double the capacity of an accord. My friend used to tow one of those from Milwaukee to Portland every fall with his Dodge Omni, and fit everything he needed for a year of college in those.

Read the statement by me above your post, unless you liquefy your belongings, then you are not going to fit any of your possessions in there ;)

I had one for a week, it was only good for carrying clothes and the like, forget the furniture.

What's the inside of it like? Maybe I'll go look at one & see...

Hmm, might work fine...

What kind of speed are they rated to?

I don't want to drive 55 mph all the way there, & I'll ship stuff to be able to do the speed limit or better.

You are asking me what the speed rating is when you know I drove a dog ass slow VW Bus ?

$2000 bucks to rent a truck? I had movers move all of my stuff from Texas to DC and paid only $600.00. We're talking a whole house full of stuff too.

Go the shipping route. Even best case (something like that little trailer) you'll still be out $150 for a hitch, wiring, and installation and I assume at least $150 or so to rent the actual trailer (one way move and a couple days), plus again at least $50 more in gas.

$350 will ship a lot of boxes and will result in zero wear and tear on your car. Honestly that's a long way to drive the car, period - and an eternity when you have a trailer behind you.

my brother is completing his trip cross country as we speak... San Diego (from NY)... they had a UHaul trailer hooked onto the back of some kind of Infiniti (his friend's car)... they didn't need to prepare it for anything... I guess just make sure your car won't die... I don't think it'll be all that heavy... once it's in motion, it's not gonna be...
