YACT: What can I use for a "foam gasket"?

Man, I think I should compile a master page of all the YACTs and it can be a regular mechanics FAQ!

Anyhoo, the "elbow" between the front air intake in the max (where the air first comes into the engine bay), and the air filter box connects loosly and has a foam gasket between the two contact points to keep out dirt and a good solid connection. This foam gasket is 2X3" rectange. It's really just a thin pad of foam with a sticky on the backing and it's wrapped around one of the joints and then the other snuggly fits over it. I massacred a portion of it last night, which is not to be unexpected considering that this stuff never ages well, and I wanted to ensure a continuing snug fit. I suppose I could put a bunch of duct tape in there but that's wrong and just a nasty thing to do.

So, what sort of place would sell this sort of thing? it could simply be a long strip of foam with stickiness on the back and I could wrap it around the joint. It's about 1/4 or so wide and 1/4 thick.

You are the best. Thank you :)

If you go to any auto parts store, they should have gasket material in sheets... you can cut it to what you need.

Either that or you can ask them for a new gasket.. they should have it.

They will have sheets of foam with the sticky backing? Remember, its not a gasket in the classic sense of being rubber or anything like that :D

I AM The mechanic. Booyah!

Try your local Nissan dealer - if you've massacred the piece, then they've probably done it a thousand times. They'll probably have exactly what you're looking for, but it might require a trip to the ATM. :p

They might, yes.

But you should be able to get the exact gasket from the auto parts store. Shouldn't need to make your own on such a new car.

I called one nissan parts place and he said he guessed it probably came attached to the unit, and I could get an entire new one. I can't see an auto parts store having this particular thing, since it's an unusual item...I'll go there later for some other stuff and make sure he knows what spot I'm talking about and maybe one of their service guys could have some input on it too, to see what they would normally do :)

Skoorb, go to your local arts and crafts store or a sewing store and purchase one sided self adhesive foam tape, they come on 1 inch, 2 inch and three inch rolls, cut to length and install, this is what I use on my customers vehicles, it works like a charm.

You can also check out your local home improvement store, some the weatherstrip products works well. This is were I get most of the foam I use for a/c systems repairs.
