Obviously we are NOT talking performance aprts here unless you really want to.

Basically, I am interested in finding out what the flywheel and the clutch are made of. It seems to me that the flywheel will outlast a clutch material-wise, so then what are they made of?

In addition, what common materials are used for clutches. I would assume composites, but since they waer out, thatpoint to metals....

I searched on google but the amount of info was very sparadic. I really don't care what kind of flywheel a CATERPILLAR tractor uses.

Flywheel is steel. Clutch is... I dunno... they used to use asbestos in them. Some kind of high temperature stuff that wears easier than steel :)

And what kind of steel is hte flywheel?...temepered steel or something..?

Does anyone have any pics of the too...I've seen them seperately, but not together....howstuffworks.com pictures are that good.

I'm not certain of "normal" flywheels, but many of the performance ones are forged chromoly steel.

Flywheels don't last forever if the bolt holes get stripped, though :|

If you want to see what they look like, pull the tranny and bellhousing of your car :)

Well the billet flywheels are made to be lightweight. So take that flywheel and
think about it with no holes. A solid disk of metal with only the bolt holes in the
middle. Stock flywheels are fairly heavy.
