YACT: What about THIS computer upgrade?

if it's a wrx, most likely these chips/upgrades increase the boost / fuel given to your engine. reliability will go down but not by much (depending on the amount of boost increase). They gains definitly can be true, but I don't know for these specific chips.

More boost = more hp

so, you could accomplish much of the same with a $50 boost controller?

No, because this is a complete system upgrade. You modify boost yes, but you also alter fuel maps, timing, etc. Most cars can see real gains with some dyno tuning and something like this.

EDIT: For example, I know my stock fuel maps are pretty rich near the top (above 5200 or VTEC engagement). Leaning out those maps makes for some nice gains.

no, ECU has access to much more, fuel/air ratio for example.
If you won't already have the WRX, get the STi. No modding involved plus you get factory warrenty.

I can't get a used sTi for <$20K though...

oh.. you're gonna buy used. In that case scratch that. How much hp are you looking for in the end?

Save your money then until they cost that little 🙂 Seriosuly, if you just hold on to it and don't bother with upgrading the contour - since you'll never see your mod money when you sell it - you can have a much faster car sooner 🙂

I'd think twice about buying a used STi. People who buy STi's drive a certain way, abuse the car a certain way, etc.... 😉

I'd like 250 at the wheels...

That should be very doable w/ ecu and exhuast upgrades. but just remember the HP bug bites hard 😉
