YACT: Waxing, necessary or not?

Is it necessary to wax your car every half year or so in addition to the frequent car wash? I don't care about my car not looking like it's fresh from the dealership, but I don't want the paint to start fading and looking old anytime soon.

I live in Vancouver, where it's not hot in the summer and not cold in the winter. Summer sits around 25 degrees with a sun that's certainly not the most potent you'll see around. Winter is usually a bit above 0, but it does fall below and there is snow so there is some salt, though not a huge amount.

Just wanna keep this bright yellow paint lookin reasonably good. =)

i figure that if you never wash your car you can preserve the look for much longer of new paint when you do wash it. i mean the dirt and stuff cakes on and creates a protective barrier to the elements.

That's the american way...

It's UV light that fades paint mostly. You're better off keeping the car clean and using some sort of polymer "wax" that includes UV protectants if all you want is to prevent fading. Also, keep the car garaged or under a carport. A true "wax" is actually a very fine polishing compound that buffs the topmost layer of paint off (thereby getting rid of a layer of oxidation and exposing the paint beneath).

my co-worker didn't wash his car for a while and now it's impossible to get the gunk off his car... none of the car wash would work.

The Bronx camoflage that birds apply is the best, both for protection and looks.

actually, what you're describing is polish. Wax gets added on top. Most waxes you buy will also do some slight abrasian too, but not all will.

Consider something synthetic, like Zaino. It's easy to put on, and lasts much longer than a good carnuba wax.
