Car is a 99 Camry LE (2.2 4cyl), approx 50,300 miles.

Yesterday temp gauge spiked and fluctuated from normal to right below the red zone on the temp gauge. Drove 10-15 miles like this tops.

Car is at the shop now, they say the water pump is going bad and they want to replace the thermostat, some gasket, and they recomended teh timing belt at the same time.

What is actually necessary, the water pump is covered under warranty so I won't have to pay for labor, just the parts.

Advice is greatly appreciated.

might as well do the timing belt. they probably have to take it off anyway to replace the pump.

How much is a new timing belt? I know the metal ones are expensive and don't need to be replaced till 100k.

Replace the Water pump, timing belt, and also the cam and crank seals. Do these all at the same time as the labor will be much cheaper to do all at once, then wait for each one to go out on its own.

I think its about a $150 part. They quoted me 151 for the thermostat and gasket, and 305 if i wanted the timing belt done too. Those are for toyota OEM parts, i dropped it off at the dealer since the car is still under warranty

I'd do the timing belt and thermostat. Which gasket are you referring to?
something that does with the thermostat, they said a little ring that goes with it

Since your coolant's empty, I'd give it a good flush and swap out the thermostat. And yes, put new gaskets on, don't reuse your current gaskets. $151 seems awfully expensive for the thermostat. If you're having someone else do the labor, it's mostly in labor cost not materials. The belt probably runs $30, the thermostat $10, and the gaskets about $5/ea. The waterpump is the only part that I'd expect to be in the $100 range.

At that mileage, you should have changed already a timing belt - if not, change it now. The rubber-made timing belt - I saw - have some 5 years max viability - and up to some mileage also (I'd say 30 000 km for my car, 3 years max - 1992 VW Passat 1.8i). However, think that a timing belt failure can provoke extensive damage to the engine (valvetrain and pistons).
The thermostat can be checked if works ok - but this will be a pretty expensive operation, at least 1 hour, maybe 2+.

Most definitely ripped off. Like Demon-Xanth said, a new timing belt costs $30-50 from Autozone. They are charging you $150 just for the part?

i'm not sure if thats just for the part of if I have to pay part of the labor. From what I gather they need to do quite a bit to get at the water pump and replace the timing belt and they said its about 3 hrs of labor. They quoted me $300 to do the timing belt by itself

In addition to what others have stated, give the radiator/block a good flush. Possible replace the hoses and clamps.

3 hours labor is about standard for replacing a timing belt or water pump.

The timing belt needs to come off to replace the water pump, so you are already paying for the labor of removing the belt. Regardless of whether or not you buy a new belt, the labor should be the exact same. If they are double charging you labor to replace the belt, then raise hell.
