It's fancy looking crap, along with plastic skirts, rear wings, and bumpy bulges, that they add to cars to make them look fast. It serves no purpose unless you don't know how to drive. And even then it's probably more dangerous to look down everytime you shift than to keep your eyes on the road.

right, so you're telling me that when you're at the drag strip, trying to shift at the redline without hitting the rev limiter, a tach is "useless"?

My parents own a town car. They do not care how fast the engine is spinning. They just want to start the engine, put it in gear, and drive without having to be concerned about anything else.

I fail to see how an extra needle on the instrument panel makes a car look fast, or even how it qualifies as "fancy". Given the choice, I'd prefer to have as much information as possible about how my car is running, rather than having to rely on my good driver spider sense.

Of course, you don't need a gas gauge or an engine temperature gauge, either, but they put those on every car. If you're good enough at driving, you shouldn't even need a speedometer.

my 2000 Ford Taurus has a tach and it's automatic as well. I probably look at the tach the same if not more than my speedometer just because I like seeing when my car is shifting or how hard the engine is working at a given speed.

i know someone who has a manual neon and it doesnt have a tach. i have an automatic protege with a tach.

The best looking tach is the one in the second or third generation vette. Imagine the tach and speedo being two half arcs of two concentric circles. The tach and speedo would race one another as you went through the gears.

I can't figure out why they don't recreate this today with two different color LEDs. That would look cool.

Because an analog guage is cheaper and easier to read. I have never been a fan of the whole "digital dash" fad. It's a fix for something that was never broken.

EDIT: And you mean the 4th generation Corvette. First Generation was '55-'62. Second Generation was '63-'67. Third Generation was '68-'82. 4th Generation was '84-'96. 5th Generation was '97-2003. 6th Generation is currently in production.

My sable used to have a tach, but now it has a gauge with numbers on it, and a needle that moves randomly, but mostly just points to the black space where there are no numbers.

I've driven a '93 toyota truck manual with no tach the thing had enough torque (4 banger) that it really didn't matter what gear you had it in.

How about the temp gauge?

Hell, let's just do away with the instrument cluster all together, since it's so dangerous to look at and you don't need any sensory input unless you don't know how to drive!

"RPM-o-mometers" are optional on many cars, whether stick shift or automatic.

A tach can be very useful. It will tell you if you are not idleing at the correct rpm. You can identify the proper power at a rpm and if it is acting sluggish you can notice it more. If there is a dip in the power you can notice where it happened in the RPM range(I have no real idea how that would help you) but atleast you can expect it and it might be useful information for a mechanic. For people to learn manual its a huge boost to have a tach. Have you ever driven a stick, when you look at the tach to shift you do it so quickly that it doesn't affect driving at all.
