I would actually get an '04 if you do get one. If you are into modding your car, or will in the future, it will be best to get an '04. CARB is putting restrictions on the modifications of cars now. For example, let's say the car's ECU has a BIOS, this BIOS has a serial number. If you reflash the ECU to get a more aggressive tune, or to complement other mods, this serial number gets erased, and a scan of the ODBII port will tell them that. This also brings up issues of warranty as well, a dealer can see whether or not you have reflashed the ECU in your vehicle. I'm not saying that you should defraud the dealer by hiding your tune, but most flashes actually make the car run better/safer. The reason the cars are 'dumbed down' is so that they can get past the DOT restrictions in the states. All that being said, my choice is this:

'03 Subaru Impreza WRX (bugeye)
'04 Subaru Impreza WRX/STi

Ok.. so far:

RX-8 3
Legacy GT 2
WRX STI 4
G35C 2
MS Mazda6 1

So majority says WRX STI so far but it is, like $30-31k. is it really that good? I mean besides power-wise because power is not much of an issue especially if the distance between traffic lights are just a couple of hundred feet away and i don't go around contesting everybody at a stop light :D
I'm not a horsepower addict so as long as the car is fun to drive it's fine with me.

well, if your into modding cars, the sti will suit you well... and their not 31k... more like 36k. 300hp, turbo.... very sporty... very very sporty.

if your into modding cars, just get a g35 man... im telling you!!! those are very very nice cars. very nice inside and out, and very quick.

mazdaspeed6.... meh. its nice, but not worth the wait, id still rather have a nissan based car over a mazda when it comes to performance. rotories are great.... but when they break, especially after warranty is gone... talk about huge hole in wallet.

g35! g35c!!!!!

I was thinking along the same lines and looked at the WRX STi, the G35 and the GTO. I walked away with the GTO. I've picked it up in Sept, and have 2300 miles on it. :D

It is a lot of car for the money.

Oh, and I'm 26 and set out to do the same as your first post.

Nothing personal but it's just that i've had several domestic cars before and it burn deep holes in my pocket as far as maintenance & repair frequency is concerned. I'm leary about getting a domestic car for now. i hope you understand, maybe it's just my bad luck with domestic cars.

The GTO is built in Australia with a very proven drivetrain. Its been around for years and has excellent reliability. Its not really an American car...

The Acura RSX should be on your test drive list. (The only problem you might have with it is that despite its sportiness, it can still get 30 MPG. ;) )

Yeah i test drove the 2005 before... it's very nice, i LOVE the feel of the clutch, but inteior is not really up to par with the other Acuras. 24mpg city is just icing on the cake :)

Mazda RX-8, Acura RSX-S, Honda S2000. Subaru Legacy GT, or Subaru WRX. Test-drive 'em all and go for what you enjoy most, they're all great cars.

Edit: Or maybe wait a bit longer for that Mazdaspeed 6... 270 hp, 6 speed, AWD... *drool*

RX-8, especially if you can still find an 04 for crazy cheap. You can get fully loaded GT maybe even with sat nav (what I have) for your price range. '05 will be more, even though nothing really changed (new key fob, satellite radio option)

Yes the mpg is sh!t, but the oil part I think is way overblown. I have 3k miles on mine, changed oil once, never even had to top off the oil so far. Everytime I check it it's still pretty high. I only check once in every 3-4 fillups now, if i have time.

My commute is like yours, and I just find myself wishing it were longer so I could drive it more....sometimes I just keep driving, it's that much fun. My friend has wrx (non-sti) and drove the rx-8, said rx-8 was more fun.

You won't consider a GTO because your affraid of the reliability when it has one of the most proven engines ever made but your thinking about getting an RX-8 with a rotary engine. hmmmm
