If the U.S. was to pass a nationwide law that passing on the right was illegal, I mean passing in a right handed lane, unless instructed to do so by construction or emergency, would you sign the petition for it or against it?

Added question, staying i the lefthand lane issue. Would you agree to having a law passed that made it illegal, nationwide, to stay in the left hand lane, unless instructed to do so by construction or emergency?

Only if another law was passed to keep the idiots out of the left lane who are hindering the flow of traffic. Sometimes you have to pass on the right because of them.

i bet if it costs ~$2,000 to get your license like in Germany, there'd be a lot of smarter drivers here.

So if I'm on a 3-lane highway and someone in the left lane is going slow it would be illegal for me to just chang eover to a different lane and go around him? That's the must F"ing retarded thing I've ever heard.

Speeding is retarded and illegal but people still do it. Passing on the right is more dangerous than people realize, no matter what kind of vehicle you are driving or passing. Honestly, if people in this country could learn how to merge with traffic, then we wouldn't have these problems.

You really suck at making polls.

If you can come up with a better one, be my guest. otherwise add suggestions.

OK, so here's a scenario for you.

3 or 4 lane each direction Interstate (Freeway, Expressway, Highway, call it what you want.)
Speed Limit: 55.
Someone in left lane driving 45.
Me driving 55 in the center lane.

Am I supposed to come right up until I'm even with the other car and then slow down to 45 because otherwise I'd be "passing on the right"? That's stupid. And say I'm in the left lane as well. I can't just move over? I'm supposed to just sit there hoping maybe the jackass driving 45 might move over someday?

Why do you think there are more than one lane? So people can go around other people.

Passing on the right, when you leave the paved road and use an emergency lane, gravel shoulder, etc, could be illegal... but not just using a valid travelling lane on a valid highway when you are in a different lane than someone else...

Yes, get the people to move over form the left lane. But if they don't, you can't make it illegal to go around them.

I would agree with those laws, I follow them. I drive pretty fast but if the guy behind me thinks 30-40mph over the limit is better I will slow down if I have to in order to merge to the right, and then get back over.

The problem is no one understands driving, you have people changing lanes right at a stopped car with out braking or signalling first, people with a left blinker turning right, people turning left from the far right lane, etc.

Passing on the right when other drivers are cruising is bad. In Germany and other Euro countries the motorists will pull right hand passers over en masse at times for a road side beating.

Most of the congestion on the roads is caused by too many people all going the same speed in a line across all lanes...they all want to be 'in front' but none of them want to speed and a lot of times even go the speed limit. I can witness this on I95 which is right next to my office. You will have absolutely noone on the road then a row of cars followed by others doing everything they can to try and get around. Usually someone screws up and a pile up occurs.

Now I understand those not wanting to be in the far right lane on roads with lots of right hand turn offs...but on any three lane road or more, the farthest right of the middle lanes should always be where you stay if you are going equal or slower speeds than the guy to your right.

That alone would solve a lot of gridlock situations. The next is if you miss your turn, go around the block or to the next exit, don't go stopping in a traffic lane hoping someone lets you cross two lanes of traffic. Old people do that here, they also stop at the beginning of a merge lane to wait for a clearing.
