YACT: VW Passat? Good or bad?

Whats everyones opinion of the VW passat? Saw one on show in the mall the other day. For some reason the car never caught my eye till that day. Man, it was SHARP. I liked it. Nice maroon / dark red with chrome trim, grey leather, wood trim.....
Just weird how it seems I never noticed the car till a few days ago.

I've had my 2002 VW Passat 1.8t for about 2 years now.... I love it! I hate my dealership, but i LOVE my car

Excellent car. My family has two, 1999 1.8T manual, and a 2001.5 1.8T tiptronic. Both have a great ride, power when you need it, and good ergonomics (IMO). Good MPG too, as my dad gets 28-30 often.

I've been averaging 32-33mpg on the highway, and roughly 22-24 in the city....

Yeah, I saw it, and even the wife commented she thought it looked very nice.
The sticker of 32,000 seemed a bit high to me though, but on the whole I was very impressed with the car. May have to run down to the dealer ship in a few months and check one out.

How can you not notice what has been the top rated family sedan for approx the last 3-4 years. Even the ultra-conservative Consumer Reports has it as the #1. Which is unusual, considering they mostly like camrys.

One regret I've always had was the W8 engine was so damn expensive. When it first came out I was thinking approx 31-32 grand 8cyl passat would dominate the family/entry-luxury market. But it was priced so high (almost into the 40 range), that it never really caught on.

Aphex - He does get 32-34 on highway, but does a little bit of city and highway (obviously) so I just averaged the two.

Where abouts do ya live? A loaded V6 down here in FL goes for a hair over 29 or so....

I got my loaded 1.8t (leather/moonroof) for under 26.

Yeah. Around here a 2003 GLX goes for 30k, GLS for 25k.

Don't VW's have histories of electronics issues? My friend's brand new VW breaks down all the time, she is thinking about filing a lemon law claim.

Kansas City. I remember it was not the 1.8. I believe it was a 2.2 with high 32K on the sticker. (Like 32,9)

Some do... We own 2 passats and short of the coil packs (which have all since been replaced), we havent had a problem....

Passats are nice, but they are a bit overpriced for what you get. You might want to spring a couple extra thousand for an Audi A4, which is a much more luxuriously appointed car. That what I did, anyway.

Albiet, a smaller car.

I had to do the A4/Passat decision myself...

Why did i go with the Passat? A few reasons....

1) Passat is a noticably larger car, sit in the back of both and bask in the difference
2) Didn't like the feel of leatherette in the A4, it felt cheap to me
3) Price. I couldnt justify spending 4k more for pretty much a smaller version of the passat. (which is basically what it is). I dont really understand your overpriced argument, as the A4 costs alot more than the Passat and isnt THAT much nicer...

Granted now, when i looked at the A4 is was the with the previous styling, which did not appeal to me as much as the newest styling.

However, in the end I went with the VW.

Even though that's fairly comprehensive (for it's class) I'd still get a 7/100 extended bumper to bumper warranty direct from VW. I love the specs, the way the VW looks but it has some piss poor quality issues.

Heck I'd even *gasp* get a Nissan Altima *gasp* without an extended warranty before a VW Passat although Passat > Altima.
