I'm really interesting in this SUV, so I'm wondering if any of you have any comments on it from real world experience- like how reliable it is, how comfortable, how well it handles some minor off roading... Do you think it's worth it for what you get?

Its very nice and comfortable. I have driven one before but im holding out for the BMW X3. Also there is no doubt about the XC90 being very safe. It is just a tad overpriced though. I suggest test driving it and test driving a Jeep Grand Cherokee also.

Does the jeep grand cherokee have any good quality parts from it's new german owners? that might be a good reason to consider that...

You are better off getting a Touraeg. The only XC-90 with any balls is the T-6 and that costs a boatload (no pun intended).

The base XC-90 is pretty lame performance wise. The only real reason to get it in my opinion is for the safety devices.

My co-worker test drove one recently and told me her impressions of it. Apparently she's been comparison shopping and this Volvo is at the top of the list. Personally, I love the looks and haven't heard much negative about it. You might want to poke around this site for more info: www.swedespeed.com

Luck!

That's one thing I was afraid of, because I'm counting on buying the base AWD model, without any of the costly engine upgrades. Is it really that underpowered?

Off the top of my head the base XC-90 is 0-60 in like 10-11 secs.

All the reviews I read said the base unit was very underpowered but the T-6 was ok. They also mentioned the T-6 is expensive for what you get.
