Never heard any warnings of this but I usually turn off my cruise control when I'm going up a long, steep hill. What do you guys say?

As long as the engine is not lugging or the tranny is not shifting between gears repeatedly you should be fine

Yeah, as long as its not struggling up the hill no problem. Besides, an auto trans would likely downshift anyway.

lol, some of use have manuals here ;)

That said, my folks Prado just drops out of CC when the torque hits a certain point, well before any damage is done...

If it's hilly country you'll get better fule consumption using the accelerator yourself anyway...

Not at a constant speed...

depends on why you're using cruise control. The only time I do is when I'm trying to keep myself from speeding too much. Unfortunately, I get bored and take cruise control off if I'm close to my destination.

I've seen a good few tests that show CC is crap in country that's hilly, since it tries to hold your speed on the hills and overspeeds over the top, rather than taking the slow down in your stride manually...

Yes, I have a manual as well. I assume my answers are directed towards people with auto trannys since the VAST majority of people have them.

I guess I was spoiled...the last CC-equipped car I had could hold it within 1MPH on all but the steepest hills, up or down :Q

Maybe it had PID rather than straight PI control...or was just better tuned for the car.

Granted, if you use your momentum to climb hills (but lose a bit of speed along the way), and let gravity speed you up on the way down (but NOT stick to a constant speed), you save some gas.

I had a manual before and it wasn't that much different. The car was able to hold its speed even in 5th gear (set at 70mph). If I turn off cruise control half up the hill I would have to downshift into 4th to keep my speed up.

I don't think that it would wear out anything any more than regular use of the Cruise. I don't know from experiance though. There are no mountains to climb in Pheonix, and I have a Manual truck.
