YACT: Used car in 9-12k range

My car was totalled about a month ago (not my fault) and I need a new car. I previously had a '99 Ford Taurus Wagon which I really liked since it was fully loaded (V6, cd changer, etc). I am looking to spend between 9 and 12k and was hoping to get between an '00 or newer. This will be bought from a dealer because a lot of the dealers down here are offerering a 0% interest for 5 years, which will help me out since I still owed some on my previous car and didn't get much back from the settlement. I am looking for a pretty reliable car, something not slow, and it would have to be an automatic, since I'm used to em and I don't have time to learn on a newer car. Any suggestions would be great. Don't forget these will be dealer prices.

Cliff Notes:

Need Used Car 9-12k from dealer. suggestions?

2001 or 2002 Nissan Maxima SE.

It has everything you want.

V6, cd changer, leather, decent performance, etc.

1997 Nissan Maxima SE fully loaded
1997 Infiniti Q45
1998 Honda Accord EX-V6 fully loaded

There you go. All of those less than $10,000

You cannot find a 2002 Maxima like that for $12,000

A loaded 2002 maxima is listed at 18,900 at a place near me, which could be brought down to 16 or so possibly, but 12 is not likely.

You're not going to get one single mention of a domestic car in this thread.
I'm sure you already know that though.

get a 2001, it doesn't have Xenon like the 2002 but there isn't much difference.
You can get a 2001 for like 12-14k with moderate mileage I think..

Infinity/Nissan have poor resale.

You can try 2000 and 2001.

I'm looking for a daily driver in the same range. I'm looking at a Volkswagen Jetta or Golf with the TDI motor. 49mpg with diesel being cheaper by the gallon too. If you wanted more power the 1.8t or Vr6 can be had too.

Intrepid with 2.7L gets great mileage for a full-size car, plenty of power for passing and aquiring traffic tickets, dirt cheap, etc.

Most of the dealerships in the area don't have a lot of maximas available, and when they do they are mostly 2002, any other ideas?

Try I30 .. same as a Maxima but with the Infiniti name and a little more options.
Also check out ES300s

Why do you want to buy from a dealer? You can find a much better deal from a private party.

VW TDIs are great. They won't last forever but a couple hundred thousand miles 🙂 I like the Golf TDI better though.

The biggest reason I like the dealership is that they offer 0% for 5 years on their financing. The bank will give me 6.45%. Also, I honestly don't know where to look to find cars from private parties. Any suggestions on that?

Um... those 0% is usually on new car purchases.
Used cars usually have normal rates.

How about a nearly new or new Suzuki Aerio; they aren't bad for reliability in recent years, C/D insists that they have moved up the automotive ladder. Not to mention, I think the car looks cool.

Dealerships will not give you 0% for a used car. Used car interest is high believe me I know. I have a great credit score and sometimes they won't give me a loan for the car I want because the car is so old that the bank won't give it out. You are looking at 6-7% for used car loans from the bank.

The greatest deal right now is a 1997 Nissan Maxima. It is very fast, gets 21/28 mileage and is very large. The bose system if you are not looking to change it is the best Nissan has offered (yes it beats the 2004 Maxima 320watt bose). Very great interior material as well.
Do not get the GXE Model. I had a GXE it's nice but for the same price you can get an SE fully loaded with a few extra miles.

Check out Maxima.org.

I have a 2002 Grand Am that I picked up in April 2003 for 11,900 (so I'm sure it would be cheaper now). I've been very happy with it so far and I've put almost 20K miles on it.

I thought so too, but then someone said Intrepid, and another said Grand Am.
