1996 Saturn SL2 130K

The Problem:
The car bangs when going from park to reverse. By bang I mean there is loud banging sound and the car jerks with force. This happened aroun 110k and it was fixed by tightening some torque nuts or something in the tranny and bringing them to spec.

Took the car in to have the tranny serviced at the dealer since they dealt with the last problem with the transmission. They replace the uppervalve body for reverse and second gear since they were part of the same valve. Total cost $452.83. Now I don't think they even drove the car to test it other than checking that it wasn't banging when it was being placed in reverse. I get the car back and its jumping through the gears when it shifts. The car physically moves when it shifts now. While in gear say, third, while accelerating it will drop. By this I mean that say it is at 2500rpms and climbing and then all of a sudden it jerks and drops to 2200 and starts to climb again. WTH? Before being "fixed" the transmission was smooth. You couldn't tell that it shifted other than looking at the tachometer. What should I say to the dealer?

Update:
Just took the car 2 miles down the road to the grocery store and the car was shifting funny. On my way back the car started dropping out of gear, than pop back in at lower gear and shift up, rev high and then not shift up at all. The service engine soon light came on and car felt like the transmission was going to drop out of the car.

The valve body was probably already going when they "fixed" it before and now that the transaxle has a healthy valve body, the previous adjustments need to be un-adjusted?

What you describe sound like an overly firm engagement of the lockup clutch in the torque converter.

Go back, tell them it's not fixed and that it's worse than before. Pray that the work has some sort of warranty behind it, otherwise, you're SOL.

sounds like low pressure is causing the clutches to slip. they may have mangled a valve or it could just be a misadjusted cable. not familar with saturns but if they have a TV cable thats out of adjustment that may do it. it could also be something electrical since its a fairly new car, in which case the best thing to do is to give an animal sacrafice to the transmission gods.

Take it back into them since it has a 1 year warranty on work. Tell them it is shifting crazy.

I'm not an expert on GM transmissions but I will try to help with what I know.

Sounds like you either had debris in the valve body, from the service, or the springs are collapsing from the increased pressure due to the adjustments. The only other possibility is the band adjustment is out allowing the pressure to bleed off to quick when the transmission changes gears, the bang and rpm drop condition.

One other possibility is a bad Torque converter clutch solenoid, which can cause erratic shifting at higher vehicle speeds.

I would contact the dealer and inform them that your vehicle is having issues with their latest service/repair.
