YACT: Turbovan: End of the line?

A week or two ago, I made the dumbest mistake of my life. I put 87 octane in the turbovan at high boost. Needless to say, BLAMMO. Nothing entertaining like parts spraying across the road, just a satisfying pop, sizzle, crack and grind.

Fast forward six hours, body is off, full drivetrain inspection in progress. In short, what happened is simple. The entire engine got flooded in turbo oil when a gasket ruptured (or somthing), and a piston rod snapped.

At the time, I had been running 32PSI (Though everyone says the limit on this block is 30PSI, so the gauge may have been a bit hokey)

Initially, the plan was for some insane MB 300D turbodiesel conversion, but the amount of work is insane. I can get the 300D parts cheap, and there's plenty of room under the body for a RWD drivetrain. But the axles just won't fit (Too long, they "fit" but they look like arse), and paying for new ones that do isn't cool in the least.

A few other people have been on me to do a Tiburon TT conversion. I can't FIND another original engine. I suppose I could fix it, but I'm afraid that there may be more damage that I overlooked.

I'm just about ready to scrap the whole mess. It's only $1000 worth of car, mods and all. It just means I'll be driving around the gas-guzzling Vandura a lot more.

Edit: I misspelled Tiburon :disgust:

why dont you just use a different rear end if its too wide.. or narrow it.

32PSI on top of ambient? or 32PSI absoloute?

and i fail to see how crappy gas made your turbo go. your car just got pinged to death.. no?
should have put some alcohol in or something, when you realized you bought 87.

RIP turbovan, definetely car with character. 😉

I don't know what you're thinking with a 300TD. Those things are so mind-boggleingly slow, that according to the theory of relativity, time actually SPEEDS UP when you hit the throttle. like seriously, trying to go up a long hill is a 100% full throttle, all the time, kind of proposition, and then the engine overheats, of course. also the ride sucks and the seats are pure torture, and the climate control is a sad joke. i'm sure it would be a big refinement improvement over the van, but any early 90's toyota or honda will blow it's door off and be quieter and more comfortable to boot. i will admit that they were beautiful cars, but they are not fun to drive, and they don't even have quirky character or anything, they're just dull. what's really scary is they sold a non-turbo version! auuuuggghhh!

Narrowing an axle is no biggie, and is relitively cheap.

This minivan would blow whatever you drive away. Ultimate sleeper.

 my fanclub.

And yeah, I'm aware of the severe pickup problems on the 300D. But I'm sure that with a bit of work, I could turn it into a daily driver type vehicle (On the turbovan's frame and body)

Definitely not a dragster, but I don't get up to the track that often anyway.

edit: no way you did not fill up your TURBO VAN with 87 OCTANE while under HIGH BOOST!!!!!!

You're such an ass. 32 psi isn't high boost? God you're retarded. Every time you post it makes me wish that either you or I weren't alive. Either way would relieve me of your posts. Sweet jesus, I'm on the verge of a tirade.

I can't tell if PowerMac was being sarcastic or not, but either way 30+ psi for a stock block (really, for anything) is impressive

PowerMac is an ass. No no, he's THE ass since Alkemyst got banned. But at least Alkemyst was half intelligent, PowerMac is just an idiot that says stupid shit[/b] and then claims that he's pwned you.

Your lose I love driving mine 😀 beside it doesn't cost much to make one fast.

Just stick another 2.5l engine in it. Its not like they are hard to find or expensive and if your running 32psi you have already invested a bit of cash.
