i will be restoring my 78 ford f-150. i will be completely tearing down to frame, and starting it over.
i am working with a *somewhat* limited budget.
so, what should i do?
i have looked into buying a crate 460 motor, but im not sure if i should... i have a 400, it would be illegal to put a 460 in it because it's 4wd... and in 78, 4wd trucks werent allowed to have 460's. so im wondering what i should do at this point. drop the motor every time i need to get it smogged, and get really good at the quickswap? im good at quickswapping carbs, as i do that every smogging. but not the whole engine.
i have the transmission to handle the 460. that's no problem. my ignition system is upgraded too. (rather stupidly upgraded compression from 8:1 to 9.2:1. dumb move, but i needed a new ignition coil to get a hotter spark for the higher compression. so now i have a good coil and system.
i have unlimited time to do this in, and a fairly decent garage. if that dont work, i'll take it to my local highschool, and do some of the work there. hehe, free access to hydraulic lifts is awesome
i saw a used 460 motor in the paper for about 400 bucks. should i go with a used motor, or buy a refurb crate motor? (about 1800)
im limited in the amount i can spend on the sound system, would it be worth trying to upgrade the sound system for a truck? what would i upgrade? i have a shell, but i want to take that off. so what can i place, and where would it go?
