YACT: transportation on the cheap < $7000.00

Alright, I'm getting ready to ditch my current car (93' altima... great engine... peeling paint + rotting frame) and get a new ride that needs to last the next 2 or 3 years, and hopefully something I'll be able to sell and get > 1300.00 for.

A quick survey @ cars.com says I can get:

99' altima - 53k - 7,000.00
98 " 65k - 6,000.00

98' sebring 59k - 7,000.00

02' escort - 20k - 7,000.00
00' focus 72k - 5,000.00
99' tauras 36k - 5,700.00

01' sephia 21k - 4,800.00

00' elantra 64k - 4,000.00

Ok, so what do you think. I'm not really concerned about sportiness (obviously) unless the car is underpowered to a dangerous extent, and I don't really care that much about fuel economy (usually stop and go, I get crappy mileage no matter what car). Feel free to suggest alternatives-

Only one of those has any statistical hope of being reliable. Do yourself a favor and get another Altima.

I would say get the Altima or the Taurus. The rest are suspect when it come to reliability.

is this just image based or is there real experince that suggests a slightly older altima w/twice as many miles will be more reliable than a newer hyundai or ford? they should all be cheap to repair (I assume)-

If the Taurus has been maintained properly, I would check that out.

It's only 4 years old, low mileage and a decent price, maybe talk them down to 5,400 or 5,500

If you're only needing something for 2-3 years, I'd go with the Taurus, or possibly one of the Hyundai's.

You can get some pretty decent cars for $7000. The ones you are looking at (with the possibly exception of the altima and maybe the taurus) all seem like garbage. They are going to continue to depreciate, badly, and most of them were pretty lousy cars to begin with.

Are you looking at financing, or paying cash?

cash. I know interest rates are low, etc., but I don't really need the hassle, especially when I have the money sitting in the bank.
