My trip to sacramento is coming up quite soon..

I need to get things rolling.. I am planning to take my GS500 and the bicycle & my stuff.

So I want put a trailer hitch on my car so I can tow a trailer behind.. either my stuff or the bike on it. A friend has a motorcycle trailer that i can borrow but without a hitch I wont be able to tow.

I have to see what the towing specs for my GS500 is.. My car is a 2000 Ford Focus SPI (110HP / 125ft/lb Tq). I think it should tow 1000 lb no problems. My bike weighs about 425lb fully laden (fuel and oil).. the trailer another say 200 pounds.. i think i should be ok with that.

Other option.. which i dont want even think about right now is to ride the 400 miles while someone else (brother or gf) drives my car up... my parents would obviously come to see me off so the driver will be able to get back home with them.

It will do it "without a problem", but I bet it will still be a bit sluggish.. :p

oh that i can expect anycase.

Any idea how much tese hitch's cost by themselves? My friend marucio has a welding thing.. or should i have them install it for me?

Also where should i get them from (any chain stores) or should i just pick the best prices from calling ppl from the yellow pages.

Try Autozone, Pep Boys and Checker. They should have a bolt on trailer hitch specifically for your car. If they don't have one at the store, they will order one in for you.

Holy Mary Mother of Jesus, you're going to tow with a Focus? I wouldn't haul 1000lbs with that car! Take some pictures when you get everything hooked up.

thanks hamburgerpimp...

I will check around for hitches..

I have seen a focus tow a trailer before, it was a ZX3 and he was pulling at 70mph no probs.

Oh not only my parents would go with me but so will vanessa..

200Lbs for a trailer is VERY light.

And note, you'll be in the right lane going over the grapevine. I'll warn family members to shoot any driver of a Ford Focus towing a motorcycle up the grapevine in the left lane. :)

Given that you'll never be able to tow more than 2000Lbs in that car (if that), all you really need is a class II hitch.
