YACT: Time for Some Audio!

I decided that since any performance upgrades for my car would be worthless, I'm going to get a decent audio setup. I have some idea of what I want, but I'm not quite sure. I'm looking to get a sub, amp, 4 speakers, and a head unit. I;ve heard from people that I should spend most of my money on a good amp, because if I get a crappy one, the whole system will suck. Is this true? Also, I don't need an enclosure for my sub since I'll just build one myself. I'm just looking for some suggestions since I'm not quite sure of what some good brands are and such.

EDIT: I have a 2000 Chevy Cavalier 2dr

Decide your budget and how you want to spend your money. Some people will want the whole thing at once while others would rather get a few things with the money and wait till they have more to finish it, all depends on your budget and what you want from it.

I'd grab an Alpine headunit and your 4 speakers to start with. What kind of car is this?

Looking for sound quality with good, but not obnoxious bass, because mostly listen to hard and classic rock. Oh, and I have a 2000 Chevy Cavalier.
