YACT: Thoughts on a 1995 Pontiac Grand Am GT

Hey guys,
My sister's car recently bit the dust - a 1995 Ford Escort LX with 175,000 miles with a warped cylinder head and the mechanic recommends to just dump it instead of pouring more money into it. Now the mechanic is selling his wife's 1995 Pontiac Grand Am GT 2 door automatic with 95,000 miles for only $3,000. The mechanic said he has taken great care of it, and it has new tires and more. My dad thinks the mechanic would like to get more for the car, but since we've dumped a ton of money into that escort at his shop and now it's dead so he's cutting us a good deal.

Sorry I don't know much else about it, but does anyone have thoughts on this vehicle?

Thanks.

BTW, I thought it was pretty remarkable that the escort was still on its original automatic transmission and still shifted great even at 175,000+ miles.

Thats not a bad deal, not a bad car.. As long as its had a lot of its 80k-100k mile work done, or if he will do it at discount, and its in good cosmetic condition then its a good deal.

Take your car to another place. Don't you find it odd that he saiyng that your car is toast when he happens to have a similarly priced one for sale? BTW, what did your sister do to warp the head? Overheat?

EDIT: Did you blue book a 95 Grand Am? Dealer retail isnt even $3000.

Is it the 3.1L V6 or the 2.3L Quad 4?

I'd say jump on it for the 3.1 for sure, very good engines. But the Quad 4 can be a problem maker, so you may want to give it a fine tooth comb...

I had a 95 grand am se w/ perf package (3.1l)

It was a great and fun little car. I had a lot of little problems

power steering hose,
alternator;
a/c compressor;
belt tensioner
cracked exhaust mani
intake mani gasket leak

when the engine started knocking I sold it for $3200

I bought it in 99 for $3000, with like 100k
sold in 2001 with 140k

It was somewhat fast, very comfortable, I kinda miss it sometimes.

Grand Spam? No way would I touch that car.

Best bet is a Japanese car. Toyota, Honda or Nissan would be my recommendation.

You think she dumped money into the escort, just wait until she gets a grand am. They are among the worst cars GM ever rolled off the assembly line. If she is looking for cheap look for another escort or a focus (02 and up on the focus mind you) or a dodge neon 99-02 or something older and japanese.

Good luck to her,

Don't get the 4-cyl Grand Am! Those engines are notorious for being money-holes if you want to keep them running. My sister already put $1500 in hers last year before she realized she needed to get rid of it.
