YACT: This sound like appropriate repairs **update #2**

GasX

Lifer
Took my car into the dealership due to the check engine light being on(been on for a while) and an intermittent oil light coming on

Apparently, I have multiple engine error codes: O2 Sensor, EGR, Misfire

They want to replace the O2 sensor
Replace the upper and lower intake gaskets
new plugs and wires
new fuel filter
perform fuel injector service.

$1300

🙁

Does this sound like an appropriate cost for this service?

And yes, I took my car to a local mechanic instead of a dealer and he said that I would have to drop the engine to change the oil pressure sender. I lost all faith in his ability/integrity and took my car to a dealer to get a proper diagnosis...

** UPDATE**

I picked up my car from the dealer. Here is a more detailed diagnosis:

error codes:
P0155 - Heated O2 Sensor Heater Circuit Malfunction (Bank 2, Sensor 1)
P0303 - Cylinder #3 Misfire Detected
P0401 - EGR Flow Insufficient Detected

One of the intake gaskets is leaking and needs to be replaced. you have to replace both if you do one. This leak is causing the engine to run rich/lean/rich/lean/rich/lean. This may have caused the other problems. A new O2 sensor, plugs, wires and fuel injector service are needed. The oil light problem is caused by a faulty switch.

I then brought my car to Autozone and it only showed 2 codes:
P0155 - Heated O2 Sensor Heater Circuit Malfunction (Bank 2, Sensor 1)
P0303 - Cylinder #3 Misfire Detected

I am thinking of finding a local (cheaper) mechanic to replace the O2 sensor, plugs wires and oil sensor and see how it goes. I bought some fuel injector cleaner for $3...

**Update #2

Got my car back yesterday. $600 got me new plugs, wires, fuel filter, oil sender switch, O2 sensors. Yes, I know I could do it for 1/3 that myself, but I don't have a driveway or time on the weekends to play with my car... 🙁

I started the car and the check engine light was still on... I figured the computer needed resetting, so I pulled the fuse and all was well - for about 5 miles. The check engine light returned and the oil light problem is still there.

Oil Light problem details: As the engine warms up, the light comes on. If I go past 1500 rpm it goes off. As I drive, the rpm threshold keeps rising until the light stays on. At the end of my commute when I get off the highway, the threshold drops again. very weird phenomenom...

The mechanic called to see fi I was happy and I told him no. He is going to run a full diagnostic when I bring my car back to him. At some level, this is generous of him as I brought my car in and told them what to do with it rather than him diagnosing the problem and recommending a solution that didn't work. Nevertheless, for $600, I am going to get my money's worth.

Any thoughts on the root causes of my problems without further info?

Well, they're aren't a lot of SVT Contour engines laying around... What choice do I have?

What car, how old and how many miles?
I'd start with filter and O2 sensor, maybe the injector service and see how she runs from there. Also, I think Auto Zone will pull error codes for free, so you can get it serviced then run a few weeks and hit up Auto Zone to check your codes.

pay a little more and put a crate 502 in it!

That's crazy! An O2 Sensor is $20, wires are about $30, plugs are $2 each, fuel filter is like $5. I'd replace those parts yourself first. And there's no way it should be another $1200 for gaskets and looking at the injectors.

Unless its A LOT of labor that sounds outrageous. However, as I'm not sure how cramped the engine bay is/layout of the engine itself it may be totally legit. I say take it for some other estimates. That, and arm yourself with a factory service manual and see just what all is involved to change those things.

I would either buy your own OBD2 scanner or take it to Autozone and have them scan it for you, find out the exact codes.

If you just have a bad O2 sensor they are prolly $70 - $80 for a Bosch O2, changing them is pretty easy but make sure the exhaust is hot or the threads will strip, you can use Mapp Gas (thats how I remove mine) or just have the exhaust hot from running the einge (I do that when I put my wideband on at the track)

Crow's foot socket and a breaker bar. Does the trick every time😀

I have been known to use my foot on the breaker bar..helps a lot. PB wrench is also your friend when removing 02 sensors.

Yah I have a fair supply of breaker bars (Family ownes a sprinkler company) 😉 I just change em hot since mine are very easy to access being a truck and I do it while I'm at the track or when I tune (Wideband O2)

Which wideband have you got LAUST? And why not just weld on another bung and have both in there?

Bah. Yours has only been in 2 years at most. The last one I pulled was in 14 years. Besides, not so bad living in Cali. Things don't tend to rust NEARLY as bad as other places. Piece of cake🙂

It's from innovate motorsports, I don't want to leave the sensor in there all the time since they are so expensive to replace and supercharged engines trash up O2's pretty quick and can make a wideband sensor less sensative.

I didn't know the widebands were that delicate vs. regular ones. Am I missing something as to why a supercharged engine would wreak more havoc on it? I would assume a turbo would do the same?

They want to replace the O2 sensor
Why, was it a lean or rich code for the system?
Replace the upper and lower intake gaskets
Again I would like to know why, is it for a engine running lean code or plugged EGR passage?
new plugs and wires
Too soon, unless it is the cause of you misfire code, plus you could do this yourself for the cost of the parts.
new fuel filter
Sounds like normal maintenance/up sell item. You are due for a fuel filter at 60K miles.
perform fuel injector service.
Again this is an up sell item, do it if you think you need it. I only found one system to due a decent job over the standard fuel injector cleaner you can by over the counter. BG Induction Service is the best in my humble opinion.

This price seem fair for all the work listed, but I don't believe you need it all unless the dealership provides more insight to the reason why.

Good Luck,
Quixfire

Thanks Quixfire

I am picking up my car, paying for the diagnostics and taking her home. I will see what a (different) local mechanic can do for me. I will post the codes when I have them.

Hah, either your car sucks a piece of sh*t or that guy does (guessing him!)! I had the sending unit changed on my maxima. It's like no labor at all to do it.

o2 sensor for my maxima is an $80 part and 30-60 minutes labor. New plugs/wires incl labor should be $90-150. Fuel filter is generally very small, and fuel injector service - at least the ones I've gotten - is throwing in a $20 bottle of BG-44k injection cleaner. The gaskets are definitely pricey though, if you really need that done 🙁

I second autozone for codes, in the future.
