That's some fine reporting there... the numbers on the side of the car may not be exact, but they're at least comparable between cars. Still valid for making a car buying decision if gas mileage is important to you. I don't expect the number on the side of my hot water heater to be exact either.

There is no way to determine real-world gas mileage. Thus, a standardized method for determining mpg was put in place that could be applied to all vehicles equally. My real-world gas mileage varies a lot from tank to tank, depending on the brand of gas I use, my average speed, and so on. It's simply not feasible to publish values for every permutation of every variable, so the test is standardized to give the consumer a reasonable idea of what they can expect.

You are absoultly right, it is total BS, and it is done with complete and full knowledge of the whores in washington that know it is BS, but do it as a favor for their customers, of which one is the auto industry.
