so i pulled the fuse

when it was cool, i took off the cap, it was a little low, the reserve overflow thingy was dry or close to it

but the temperature gauge never moved high when the engine was running

and it was raining and cold today , so the engine wasn't even warm that long after turning it off

something has it stuck on

Replace the relay. it probably stuck in the closed position. It may also be a bad temp sender, but that would effect your gauge unless yoru fan has a seperate sender which activates the fan.

First of all, it sounds like you have a coolant leak somewhere, so be sure to try to locate it.
Being that it doesn't sound like it actually overheated, and even if it ran a bit on the hot side, 4 hours for the fan just isn't right. Sounds like a bad fan temperature sensor switch or timer unit.

I agree with evadman... Go to the parts store, get a book for your car (Chiltons), and the relay - replace that first and see if it solves the problem. Then try the sender, or see what the auto parts guys think... a lot of them that I've dealt with are pretty knowledgeable.

And you need to find out why your coolant overflow/reserve is empty.
That's not something you should ignore.
