YACT: tapping noises when gas depressed.

When i start to depress the gas, i hear a tapping sound coming from near the glove compartment. At first i thought there was something inside moving around, but i emptied everything and it continues to making the tapping noise. It only occurs when i step on the gas in gear. When i depress the gas in neutral it doesn't make the sound. I read and done some research, at first i thought it was a transmission problem but i read something about an optispark going bad?

'99 Accord 4-cyl 82k

has anyone had this problem before, and how much would it cost to have optispark replaced?

Edit: nothing seems to be loose. i tried coasting in "N" and shake the wheel violently to induce movement and it doesn't make a sound.

i've done further research and it maybe a leaky exhaust? i might have to change the manifold?

also wanted to get some price quotas before i nose dive helplessly to a mechanic.

TIA

That kind of sounds like pinging to me.

pinging is distinct, and not a tapping noise, it really sounds like a ping. ive heard it.

it sounds like its not pinging because of the fact that it also has to be in gear, pinging will occur anytime.

it could just be a rattle of the glove box because its sorta lose, push on the glove box and make it tighter, does it stop then???

Pinging is normally only noticable when the engine is under load. I am not saying for certain it is pinging but given his description it is within the realm of possibility. I've heard lots of pinging given that it was a much more common problem when they first started playing with the timing and adding emission control devices in the 1970's.

if it is not engine detonation you may have a grounding/electrical issue. Try putting in some extra ground wires on the engine and see if it eliminates the noise.

edit: could be an exhaust leak

Could always be the heater core fan making noise... Try making sure all that junk is turned off and see if you still notice it. If it was spark-knock or pinging, it would be from getting cheap/low octane fuel. Unlikely to get it in a 4 banger, but it could happen if you need a new oxygen sensor or get water in your gas.

I used to have an old honda with pinging problem. In the summer, it would get worse, it would make tapping noise under load such as on a climb from a stop. I am not sure, but I thought that the auto-ignition was so bad that it would do more than pinging.

ADD: when it tapped, it lost engine power, too.
