'90 Accord automatic

quick background: last year we replaced the O2 sensor which was causing all kinds of problems like non-acceleration after stopped or while in 1st gear. After weeks, we finally figured it out... no problems till now again...

this time: the Accord has an "S" on the dash that indicates when you're in "Sports" mode... as opposed to "Normal" mode. Basically Normal is OverDrive and that's what we use. 3 nights ago while driving on local roads in the rain, the S light on the dash starts blinking. I press/release the Sports button a few times but the light continues to blink. Driveability is normal though, no choking, no weird gear shifts or anything. I read the manual and the indication is a "possible transmission problem" and to "avoid rapid acceleration" and take it in to get checked.

The next night when I start the car, the problem is gone, but after a little while of driving, the "S" blinks again. But normal driveability. I drove over a large puddle at highway speeds (55mph in rain) and soon after my speedometer drops to 0 while still at ~55mph... and then reads again... on and off Still driving normally otherwise.

This morning, it started with no blinking light, but soon after, the speedometer drops to 0 and this time the check engine light comes on. Still, normal driveability.

Now is this a "got wet" issue or are all these symptoms (dash lights at least) a sign of real problems ? When we had the O2 sensor problem, Honda tried telling us our transmission was going, but the car has driven perfectly for a year since replacing the sensor. Does the underbody getting wet have a lot to do with this kind of thing ? Especially worried since the speedo is affected this time. It was raining 2 days straight and is still damp out there today but not wet. Maybe the car hasn't completely dried. (?)

Yeah...my 1990 Honda manual POS is still going strong even though the suspension is shot, it burns oil, and is noisy as hell...

At least the lights blink only when I tell the mtoo ...;)

P.S.

Good Luck with your car. THe damn thing could be dying for all we know, and yet it will still be "dying" two years later:D

I've never really driven a car to its death so I don't know what to look for. But since '98, it's had a multitude of miscellaneous problems like holes in the muffler (road salt, condensation, etc.) - [we've had 3 Hondas in my family all with this problem], catalytic converter, small leak in the fuel line, the O2 problem, and now this. It is 14 years old, but it makes a great commuter car. Hell my dad's '89 Accord was still going strong before he wanted a new minivan last year. If this can be fixed easily, I'd do it, rather than commute for 10 minutes with my truck everyday (2 separate trips). I hate that kind of wear and tear.

The S light blinking is the equivalent of your check engine light coming on. You can pull a code for the tranny to at least see what the computer thinks is wrong. Honestly, you can get those tranny so cheap I'd just dump this one if something's wrong with it.

And before you people bash Honda's auto trannys; its only the V6 tranny that are/were having problems. The ones they put on 4 bangers have been fine. Some people feel they shift a bit hard but that's by design. I do agree tho something is awry at the V6 tranny engineering shop:p

Hmm..I missed that bit of info in the original post. That's certainly a possiblity. Either that or water got into the connector.

Yeah I ran that puddle pretty hard (forced to stay in the right lane)... and water splashed higher than the car's height. Does a wet connector fix itself or does it short something ?

You can pull the connector and look for signs of corrosion. If you look down under the intake tube (fat plastic one) you'll see a thing sitting on the tranny that has a 3-wire connector on top and two small tube going into it. Its kinda goldish in color.
