YACT: Superchips

GasX

Lifer
I can get a superchips module for my car that adds according to the manufactuer 12HP and 18ft lb of torque (and 20HP according the the retailer... ) for under $250.

Anyone had any experience with these things? Do they have a tangible discernible effect or is it just a bench racer's upgrade?

some cars the computers do a good job
increase the rev limiter, change timing and such, but sometimes they are just crap.

Mopar PCM's for 95-99 Neons (manual transmissions) are awesome, just for example.

I thought a faux dual exhaust did too?

Generally what they do is trick the PCM into thinking you engine is running about 40 degrees cooler there by causing the PCM to retard timing and increase the fuel injection pulse width to make the engine run richer.

I can do the same thing with a two-dollar resistor from Radio Shack and about a half hour of my time.

Any long term wear and tear issues from this kind of mod?

Is 12HP at the wheels? Otherwise you won't feel anything.

OMG! I can't believe how stupid you are... seriously. It just boggles the mind. People are such retards these days.

It's the R-Type sticker that does it.

😀

Not really, just changing your spark plugs every 60K instead of 105K and check your oil between changes for fuel.

Remember you would be tricking the engine into running richer, that increases the amount fuel you will use and the amount of fuel in you blow-by gases and exhaust.

At a minimum: Catalytic Converter damage over time. Possibly ring/cylinder wall wear due to the rich conditions and the fuel washing the oil off the cylinder walls.

Stock gas+manual: doesn't do squat. Might increase limiters.
Stock gas+automatic: helps with the shift timing/firmness
Modified gas: depending on the modifications, nothing to being required.
Collary: turbo/supercharged engines tend to gain more.
Diesels: they do ALOT. Silly gains can be had from just ECU upgrades.

a 1998 Ford SVT Contour

Then save your money - the chip won't do squat. What those chip companies do is spend all of their development time on the big money makers - Camaros, Mustangs, Turbo 4 cyl. cars, etc. The rest of their chip lineup is just pure junk that they toss out to increase their volume. They have very little R&D time into them. All they will do is maybe get rid of the speed limiter, jack with the timing, and make you have to run premium fuel.

A site for GM FWD cars did a dyno comparison and found the Superchip to actually lose 2hp compared to the stock chip.

Spend your money on something that works.

I aksed about the claims of the guy selling the resistor on eBay. Not quite the same...

Gotcha! I figured the price difference meant something too. Cheap on eBay vs 250 in this case 🙂

I've heard of folks failing emissions test after installing them.

Well, duh.

Car companies have to meet emissions regulations, so they often can't crank the engine as far as their customers would like. The aftermarket chip vendors don't care about passing emissions tests and therefore can give you the power that the manufacturer had to hold back.
