What are your thoughts on these types of cars?

It appears they mostly come out of the UK. I know of Caterhams, Westfields and the Ariel Atom (Top Gear Video)). Are there any others? Perhaps something made in the US?

Also, how street legal are these?

lol - I consider an S2000 or Lotus Elise to be super minimalist.

As cool as some of those "minimalist" style cars are, I'd rather buy a motorcycle if I really wanted something like that.

Edit: And how on Earth do you call an S2000 minimalist?!

Well, I like having at least an exo-skeleton around me...and since it's a car, no helmet

An S2000 is minimalist, but not super-minimalist :)

During my drive home yesterday, I saw a Lotus Elise. Every time I see one of these cars I am always surprised by how small and low they are. About ten minutes later I saw a car that was even lower. Because of traffic it took awhile for me to catch up with it and I only saw it as it exited the highway. It looked like an open wheel formula race car. The top of its rear spoiler was at bumper level with the SUV tailgating it.

Cool toys, but I am not sure I would want to drive them on the highway though.

Wow...I wonder what it was.

I'd retain a beater, so if I were to buy something like this, it would see lots of twisty backroads time but not so much straight, open highway time

Ariel Atom w/ supercharged Civic Type R engine @ 300 HP. the shots of Jeremy Clarkson driving the "merely" 220 HP model with his cheeks flapping wildly in the wind as his head is slammed back into the headrest are pretty awe-inspiring.

/end of thread. period.

no, really. end of thread.

w0ot :)

Also, mentioning the S2000 wouldn't make sense in this thread, as that's the current car I have that's not minimalist enough :)

Heh.. this reminds me of one of WayneTek's 42 million threads on G35s, RX-8s and S2000s. And the thread where he asked about a helmet for the s2000 that he never got.

I'm sure it's gonna be fun driving it until you get rolled over by a jacked up SUV.
