I'm avoiding VW based on two first-hand experiences, both 2002 Jettas from different states. I've heard enough stories about recalls to fix cooling fans that may halt and melt, all the way to driver side windows falling into the door and cars that slip out of drive every so often, that I now want to avoid VW at all costs.

My 03 Passat 1.8 has 23,000 miles and not a problem. For the price, I had a hard time finding a comparable car. I have heard the jetta/ golf/ beetle platform has some issues, but like others have said, those are made in Mexico. My passat was made in germany and have experienced nothing but quailty. I did a TON of research before I purchased, everyone at Edmunds likes it, and Consumer Reports reported average reliability. I'll buy another one in the heart beat.

personally, I do feel that people on this board bash VW just to join in with the crowd. I have an 02 Jetta 1.8t with over 50k miles and have had nary a serious problem with it. the only thing that happened out of the ordinary was a coil pack failed. took it to the dealer and they replaced all 4 under warranty within 30 minutes. they changed the window regulators during scheduled maintenance. i had the 2 front wheel bearings go bad due to the wheels being out of balance from bad mount and balance job at a local mom n pop shop when I picked up a few nails in the road. VW replaced those under warranty and I was gone within an hour. So either I am extremely lucky (which I doubt) or you guys are just hopping on the bandwagon without just cause.

My ex has an 02 accord ex that we bought within 2 months of each other and she has gone through 3 O2 sensors, 2 transmissions and a busted radiator hose. Not to mention the various interior panels coming appart. For a car that is supposed to be the epitome of reliability, i think that is just the worst

1999 VW Passat GLX here. It's been flawless. Looks and runs like the day I bought it.

That's the thing - everybody knows somebody with at least 1 bad VW, just like you know somebody who had a problem with their Honda, just like I know an assload of people who had sh!t luck with Nissan. Based on the experiences off of people that you know, you tend to chime in when somebody tries to recommend or inquire about a particular brand of car. How is it that you saying that Honda is the worst any different from us saying VW sucks balls?

I wasn't saying that honda in general sucks ass, i was saying that HER honda sucks donkey balls. I was just using her car as an example of how no car company is perfect, even the one known to the public as most reliable. I have no problem with Honda or any other Import, be it Japanese or German. They just don't suit my personal tastes

i have a 99 jetta, just hit 73,000 miles. only problem I had was the spark plugs needed to be replaced (at 70,000 miles, imagine that!) I myself have never had a problem, but I bought it used, so everything was taken care of before I got it.

I've heard a lot of negative things about VW's from customers when I worked out of a VW dealership in California. However, for every negative feedback, I've heard positive from VW customers. One thing I have learned is that you either love them or have them. The people who love their VW/Audi seem to know quite a bit about them, AND the ones that hate them still seem to know quite a bit as well. I personally am a huge fan of VW's which doesn't say too much since I don't own one. The JEtta GLI was the runner up in my final decision to purchase a vehicle. I must admit the new VW engines are very nice be it the VR6 or the 1.8T.

How can one argue the R32, the GLI, the W8; especially since Audi technology is finding itself in many VW's today.
