YACT - stereo replacement guide

dabuddha

Lifer
Just got a 98 mercury grand marquis and I'd like to replace the stereo that came with it. Anyone know if theres a step by step guide anywhere online? I'm trying to avoid buying a haynes manual or a chiltons.

TIA!

EDIT:
Thanks for all the info. I'm planning on doing this within 2 weeks. Have to purchase my alpine unit first 🙂

I was looking at replacing the car alarm as well. Does anyone have any experience with the Autopage RS-855 alarm?
What I want is
[*]Keyless entry
[*]Alarm (of course 😀 )
[*]Remote Start
[*]Trunk opener (Car already has the trunk opener factory installed)

This system seems to do all that plus it was recommended by a friend.

Those won't tell you how to do it
If you don't know how, buy the stereo from Crutchfield.

Usually involves taking off the trim around the stereo. IIRC you'll need the Ford stereo removal keys (2 U shaped prongs with notches on the end to unfasten the stereo from the dash) Not all that hard.

Technically, he doesn't have to buy the stereo from Crutchfield, just pay the $5 for the instructions, which normally come free with a stereo purchase.

Cool, I didn't know they do that.

or a coat hanger . . . recently pulled the stereo from my '91 Sable when my sister destroyed it, coat hanger worked fine.

is your key bigger than normal or no?

If not, I can supply you with all the documents you need to install the starter. Otherwise you will want to take it to a pro to have it done.

I don't think it's bigger than normal 🙂 But I'm going to get a pro to install it anyways. The radio I don't mind doing myself but the alarm I'd rather have someone else do it. Have you heard about the Autopage RS-855 by any chance? I'm thinking of buying it.
