yact: steering shakes/rattles at high speed, even more so when braking.

High speed = freeway speed or 70-80mph.

It doesn't happen ALL the time though; sometimes the steering is 'solid'; I can let go of the wheel and the car will still go in a straight line. The shakes and rattles when braking from high speed also doesn't happen all the time too; but when it does, it is kinda violent.

Could also be a bad motor mount. Also check your ball joints. How's the steering? Does it feel loose when turning? After turning, will the steering wheel go back to 12 o'clock on its own or do you need to give it a nudge?

Rotors are warped for one thing. You might have a bad alignment too.

Exactly.

and that will cause shaking during braking;
so what causes the shaking during driving?

Rotors probably. The braking and shaking is usually a sign of that. The shaking without braking maybe because your tires are unevenly worn now. Could also be a rim damage or a rim that lost it's balancing weight

Steering is okay... it was pretty much the same since I bought it 4 years/100k miles ago.
I don't need to force it to go back to 12 o'clock point.

thanks anyways to other inputs. Will have rotors changed when the brake pad needs to be changed.

People grind the rotors too quickly, they get thin, and warp. Repalcement non-oem rotors also famous for this.

Make sure to change pads b4 rotors gouge badly, and secondly, "slight" rotor wear does NOT mean resurfacinf everytime. One reason I dont like to use ceramic or metallic pads, too hot/hard on rotors. Cheaper to replace softer pads more often.

Few things:

1- balance needs to be checked
2- wheel alignment
3- check power steering fluid
4- how old are your tires?
